Update: Later Monday night, President Caslen recanted the comments below in a statement.

Original Story

With South Carolina sitting at 4-7 with only a game against Clemson remaining, a disappointing 4-8 final record is likely.

However, in recent days, both AD Ray Tanner and school president Robert Caslen have offered their support to coach Will Muschamp.

But, on Monday, Caslen spoke with SCNow.com and said Tanner has reached out to Florida State to ask how the Seminoles came up with the money to pay for fired coach Willie Taggart’s $18 million buyout:

“No, but our athletic director (Ray Tanner) has,” Caslen said during an interview session at the Morning News. “And they’ve got a whole lot more money in their athletic endowment than we do. I know that, for a fact.

“Listen, for the record, (Muschamp) is my coach, period. And he’ll remain my coach, just for the record. If you look at the athletic director’s statement (from Saturday), that’s the same that I endorse.”

Muschamp’s buyout is a hefty $19.4 million right now and $18.8 million after Dec. 31.

Caslen continues to speak about the situation, making headlines each time. At some point, it’s worth asking what he hopes to gain by speaking about Muschamp’s future so often.
