South Carolina suffers major decommitment from 5-star 2022 recruit
South Carolina suffered a tremendous blow to its 2022 recruiting class when 5-star QB recruit Gunner Stockton announced he would decommit from the Gamecocks.
Stockton is from Tiger, Georgia in the northeast mountains, and reportedly has 23 offers. He is ranked the No. 1 dual threat QB in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite, and the No. 27 player overall in that class. Stockton plays for Jaybo Shaw (the brother of South Carolina legend and assistant coach Connor Shaw) at Rabun County.
In a social media announcement, Stockton wrote, “Back in August, I made the decision to commit to the University, program and staff. A lot has changed since that time, and I feel that I should reevaluate my situation.”
Auburn, and likely Georgia, are expected to be in the running among other schools now that Stockton’s recruitment has re-opened.
Here is his 247Sports scouting report:
“Stocky prospect at the quarterback that doesn’t appear to have significant growth potential,” with a comparison to North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell. “Good athlete with a baseball background that has active feet in the pocket. Can extend plays when needed and accounted for over 700 rushing yards as a freshman against limited competition. Is capable of making some advanced throws and shows touch and ball placement downfield. Shows creativity and competency delivering on screens and RPO throws on the move. Comfortable making tight-window seem throws with velocity. Still in the early stages of his development and shows the need to load up on big balls. Has a tendency to overstep with his front foot and can get loose mechanically. Very early stages of a potential NFL prospect but significant experience and development is still necessary.”

Here are his highlights from Hudl:
Was to be expected
He was committed to Bobo not any university
Agree, his dad has long time connections to the Bobo family. Could easily see him end up at Auburn.
Hes not very smart if he’s committed to Dodo.
Who didn’t see this coming?
What is it with Georgia alumni destroying sec east teams? Muschump screwed Florida and then USC. Dodo forced hills useless behind on us, ran hilinski off, and poached Stockton. Screw Georgia don’t have much use for anything in cesspool of the south.
Glad this will finally be over with.
Easy choice, connections with the Bobo family and brand new coaching staff (unproven) at SC…. why not take a chance on the plains with a higher upside.
Not sure there’s more upside there. He’s going to an Auburn team that hasn’t been competitive in the west in a while with an unproven SEC HC with a couple of SEC rethreads as assistants. He would’ve faired better at GA honestly.
Good points and in general both situations would be similar. It just seems like SC will have a steeper hill to climb talent wise than AU. Nope, don’t want him back at UGA and quite happy with Monken if we can keep him.
ah, well happy with Monken vs Bobo and your comment was really Stockton would be better off at UGA. Now that’s a different story. I really think we would be in a tough situation with Daniels, Beck, Vandagriff (coming in). Brink in Stockton and somebody’s gonna get pissed and leave. I’m not so sure Beck won’t leave as it is.
I agree but Idk about steeper. In the west you got Bama, LSU and Texas AM on the rise. You also have Kiffin and the pirate. In the East, you have GA and FL. FL may lose Mullen to the NFL and GA may have a problem with the possible recruiting violations. Either way it’s easier to win in the East then the West.
Literally won the west 3 years ago..
Yeah…won the west.
3 years is a recruiting cycle in the SEC, and you guys have dipped ever since. Might as well been 50 years.
RoosterC- “Hasn’t been competitive in the west in a while” is what I was responding to lightbulb.. lol
Belichick – what exactly is “a while” to you?
Like a said a while recruiting cycle ago, how many of those players are still there? Plus, unlike the other western teams that have won since, Auburn couldn’t secure the natty or the conference.
6 are still on the team.
Speaking of securing a national title or conference title, where are all of South Carolina’s?
Like Auburn, the last decade, SC doesn’t have any Natty’s and one less SEC. congrats, I guess, on the SEC title, 7 years ago….weird flex but ok, lol
Lol one less SEC. Buddy, y’all don’t have any SEC championships or nattys. Might wanna sit this one out.
Like I said above, the past decade. You might want to sit this one out if you think a championship over a decade ago and one more than a half century ago makes you relevant today.
Let’s go the entire South Carolina football history because y’all haven’t been relevant ever lol
I love how you limit it to a decade though, seeing as we have won a championship this century and in the modern era of college football. Also have been to another. All in the midst of the greatest dynasty of all time in the same division. Pretty laughable coming from a usc fan.
I’m not claiming relevance, just stating facts. And a decade is a good barometer when talking relevance. Really you are only as good as your last three recruiting cycles. If you want to boast about ancient history that’s on you. Keep living in the past, makes sense why your fan base is so excited about wasting money on a bunch of has been coaches to round out your staff.
You talk a lot for a fan of a program that hasn’t ever been relevant.. like ever.
Only good as your last recruiting cycles, huh? How’s UGA doing? It’s more than just recruiting buddy. Clemson has won titles without having a top ten recruiting class avg. Auburn has been ~5th in the sec recruiting and ~5th in sec standings.
Keep living in the past? Lol what? It’s history. It’s part of the program and how you build them.
So next you are going to tell me that Nebraska and SMU are relevant because after all, they have a storied history, over a decade ago.
And I said recruiting cycles, not necessarily recruits, you completely wiffed on that. Coaching matters. That’s why it’s weird to watch Auburn spend so much on relics.
History? 18 year old kids could care that your last natty came when “Party Rocking” was tearing up the charts. It’s relevance. What have you done in the playoff era.
You think 18 year olds know Cam Newton? Stfu lol you’re so lost it’s not even funny.
What was the number 1 song during yalls last natty? Lol
Yeah, they know him as the guy that is the washed up QB that replaced Brady in New England, how did that turn out, so stfu. No 18 year old remembers him when he was at Auburn for a year. If they did, I’m sure they would remember the scandal as well.
And nice try at whataboutism, but we have already noted that SC isn’t relevant, it dosent change the fact that Auburn is irrelevant as well.
Washed or not is debatable. Hard to throw to a bunch of office managers who can’t catch. He’s still in the league which makes him relevant, which makes Auburn relevant. You suck at this.
Cleared of all wrong doing. Try again. They also remember his MVP season. Again, relevant.
If Auburn is irrelevant, they aren’t, then you wouldn’t be trying to so hard, and failing, to make it true. Auburn is top 15 program regardless of any decade.
Lol, congrats on top 15, aim high war eagle.
If that’s your idea of relevance, hanging out in the NFL making the league minimum and finishing top 15 in college rankings, then your SEC rethread hires make sense.
If you can’t beat em, overpay for them, the Auburn way.
Trying to aim higher. We just fired a coach with a winning record, an sec title, another appearance and a national championship appearance. USC would be throwing a party for a coach like that.
Top 15 historically and probably higher in the last decade. That’s relevant. Having a top 10-12 class every year despite going 8-4 is relevant. Again, you suck at this..
We just fired a coach with a winning record in the SEC including a SEC championship game under his belt. Unlike Auburn we aren’t celebrating mediocrity.
Again if top 15 is your goal, congrats. Hiring a vanilla group of SEC re threads to your staff makes sense then. Aim for 15th.
Who is “we”? USC hasn’t won an sec title lol
Muschamp had a winning record and coached in a SEC Championship. Try and keep up.
Not at USC he didn’t lol and didn’t have a winning record in the sec either. Again, you suck at this.
Again, sorry for the typo but Muschamp still has a winning record. *Not in the SEC. and coached in an SEC championship.
You referenced Gus’ winning record and flexed about firing a coach with a winning record, so did SC.
I never said he accomplished those things at SC.
Sorry, that was very Top 15 of me to not proof before hitting publish comment.
Try and keep up.
It’s hard to keep up with stupidity..
At USC he didn’t have a winning record. Quit taking credit for what he did at UF. It’s irrelevant.
No, stupidity would be you claiming Richt wasn’t successful without Bobo. Numbers don’t lie.
As far as my statement, it’s all true. What’s irrelevant is Auburn’s desperate grab at SEC retreads that really haven’t been successful or relevant in a long time. After all if they have been, they would now be at Bama and not Bama lite.
Best of luck striving for 15, I hope you get a return on your investment.
Exactly numbers don’t lie. You saw them after you posted this didn’t you? Lol.
Again.. nothing to say. Laughable.
Have fun striving for top 50, maybe.
I did. I responded. you are still wrong.
Wow! We got a POW WOW going on here. wde0012, didn’t a 2-8 South Carolina beat you this year?
Yeah.. what’s your point?
No point actually.
@SDS, no point needed, this dude is still clinging to ancient history and fails to see how Auburn has fallen.
This guy thinks 2017, 2013 and 2010 is ancient history lol
It is if you are getting beat by a 2 win team in 2020.
Upsets happen bud.. lol congrats on the victory. Still doesn’t mean it’s ancient history
He would be a great fit at Auburn with Harsin there now.
So you’re saying Harsin has all the answers?
Honestly, a guy like Stockton would be a great fit anywhere. But yeah, Harsin is a good coach and has proven to always be good with QB’s, probably because he was one. That’s not to say a long snapper like Beamer couldn’t be good with QB’s though, he just doesn’t have the track record yet.
Booches..Another great comment from you ! I agree that in order to develop any player’s raw-talent into something special…he must be properly coached. Harsin does have that track record…whereas Beamer comes from a football family and is learning on-the-job.
Yeah, to be expected. But I haven’t seen him commit to Auburn yet.
Let’s let the Shaw brothers work on him and Beamer give it his best shot, I wont give up on it.
Choo Choo
Once again the Chickens lose out on the quality players they need.
You lost any sense of a serious comment at “Chickens”, but that’s to be expected.
Suffers? Fffft…that commitment was a loooong way off. Most kids are going to commit and uncommitted 4-5 times as far out as his was.
Not committed to usc bye, no room on the train for you. Didnt even thank usc.
Auburn has a real HC, OL, and WR’s. What you got?
Character and ethics.
You do have the edge on them there.
Character, ethics and UGA should never be in a sentence together.
BAHAHAHAHA
UGA wasn’t in the sentence, Lightbulb. Auburn was.
Uga fan responded, lightbulb
So you’re a fan of Butch jones and being champions of life? Congrats!
Never said that. Try again.
You said you had character and ethics.. seems like champions of life imo because I know it isn’t real championships
You’d make a good politician. Hear what they say, then make them believe they said something different.
Lol what? He can believe what he wants. Uga fan asked what they had.. he said character and ethics. To me, that sounded like Butch Jones “life of champions”.
That victory over Auburn for one, and real head coach? That is to be determined. He did good in the sunbelt and whatever conference Boise is in, congrats.
Congrats on your 2 win season. Must feel great.
Yeeeeahhhh. But one of those two wins were your team. Makes it very sweet.
#ChoochooMF
#RollTideRoll
Using another teams chant because you’re program is awful.. lol congrats on winning your first game vs Auburn since 1933
Congrats on losing to a 2 win team. And it does feel better than losing to a 2 win team, I can tell you that.
Low standards at South Carolina.. must be why you’re so giddy about 2 wins.
Even lower standards at Auburn, over paying for a coaching staff that only won two games.
Must be so why you are so giddy at spending so much on a coaching staff whose had half of the their wins come at your expense last year.
English please.. good lord
Here you go, I fixed the autocorrects for you since this is your first day on the internet and this website apparently….
Even lower standards at Auburn, overpaying for a coaching staff that only won two games.
Must be why you are so giddy at spending so much on a coaching staff who had half of their wins come at your expense last year.
Lol big internet tough guy
Bobo has a proven track record, he just worked with one of the worst sec HCs of all time and not much talent. Garner is an alum so that makes sense and has worked at AU before and won a title, something USC has not done. Friend didn’t even coach a game at usc so he had nothing to do with that program. But other than that yeah I am giddy. It’s a heck of a staff. If you didn’t think so you wouldn’t be mentioning it.
Lol, bobo, the guy that is 30-50 and 0-3 without Richt to learn on.
Garner? I’m guessing Rocker, the guy that was so bad that Pruitt didn’t even want to renew his contract.
Friend, the guy that took 4 and 5 stars and made them look like 3 stars at TN
Mason, the guy that hasn’t coached d in 7 years.
I’m giddy they are your coaches and not ours. Just make sure those checks clear and we are good, lol.
Lol including Bobos record as if he’s been the HC for those 80 games.. laughable. You got it right, those all his fault. No wonder you’re the laughing stock of the sec like vandy.
Yes, Rocker not Garner. He’s a proven DL coach and had the opportunity to come back home and did. Don’t get butthurt he spurned y’all. You would’ve been happy to have him on your staff. Mason has been around the sec and will be just fine. A lot more talent at AU than vandy..
Friend was there for two years and one year didn’t even have spring practice. You were giddy that usc got him and now butthurt that he left..
Facts are facts, what has Bobo done without Richt?
I assure you no one was giddy for Rocker who did nothing to develop Burch and Pickens and Friend again see reply above, nobody was excited about this guy, except maybe Auburn, congrats and pay up, lol
Have you seen Auburns OL the last 5 years? Anything was an upgrade at that position and someone who can recruit. Also have Boises OL coach on staff too.
Bobo has led top 10 offenses every where he has been expect USC, with no spring and a culture so bad that half the team quit mid way. Please go look up his history at CSU and don’t just look at W-L record..
I have and it’s really not that impressive
Bobo- Not that impressive:
2019 7 out of 12 in offense in the MW
2018 8 out of 12 in offense in the MW
2017 2 out of 12 in offense in MW
2016 3 out of 12 in offense in MW
Again, the MW not know for defense
In terms of total offense, (yards per game) he’s been outside the top 50 once as a HC, with an average of 36th. In that same time span Auburn was outside the top 50, three times with an average of 61st. Bobo has proven to put a productive product out there everywhere he has been and to say otherwise is just being lazy.
Being middle of the pack in the Mountain West in offense isn’t impressive. You do realize Bobo will be coaching against SEC defenses right?
You do realize there is a talent difference between CSU and auburn, right?
You aren’t getting it. There’s also a huge difference between the Mountain West Defenses and SEC Defenses. Again Bobo without Richt = not that impressive
You keep telling yourself that but his track record says otherwise..
How was Ritch after bobo? Not impressive at all..
Please quit embarrassing yourself.
Richt is 35-16 without Bobo and won the Walter Camp Award and ACC coach of the year in 2017.
Far cry from middle of the pack in the Mountain West.
Also got fired from uga the one year after bobo left..
You want facts?
Here’s some:
Uga was 8th in total offense in 2014. After Bobo left they dropped to 85th and Richt was fired. Took the job in Miami and never had a top 35 offense. In his 3 years, the offenses went 37th, 59th, and 66th. Steady decline. And let’s not act like the ACC is known for their defense either.
ACC > MW
Richt > Bobo
I see you have nothing lol I figured.
Richt without Bobo is average at best but go off.
Also the drop in GA’s offense had more to do with Gurley being gone and the Chubb injury than anything Bobo did. Rushing dropped 60 yards a game in between the two seasons. Meanwhile without the “QB Guru” Bobo, production only dropped 7 percent with a new QB from 67 to 60 completion rate, not bad at all.
Richt was successful without Bobo, but Bobo wasn’t without Richt. Numbers don’t lie.
Here come the excuses.. lol
Sony Michel didn’t play? Take your L and move along.
I literally just gave you numbers and you still claim Richt was successful without bobo when numbers say otherwise.. laughable. Absolutely hilarious.
No excuses, just facts.
I repeat because you are slow. The drop in GA’s offense had more to do with Gurley being gone and the Chubb injury than anything Bobo did. Rushing dropped 60 yards a game in between the two seasons. Meanwhile without the “QB Guru” Bobo, QB production only dropped 7 percent with a new QB from 67 to 60 completion rate, not bad at all. With a new QB yards per game dropped only 10 yards per game.
Again Richt won ACC coach of the year and Walter Camp without Bobo.
What exactly did Bobo accomplish without Richt?
Claiming people that got hurt as a reason is an excuse especially when they had a rusher for 1000 yards..
In 2014 UGA averaged 459 yards on offense. After bobo left they dropped to 375. In 2014 UGA averaged 41 ppg. In 2015 they averaged 26.
Richt, while at Miami, never averaged more than 34 ppg. Yards per game went from 426, 403 then to 358. That is what you call a decline in production.
Bobo, in the same years for Richt at Miami, averaged 462, 493 and and 410, respectively. So even in his worst year he was just as productive as Richt in his best year.
Richt’s starting quarterbacks completion percentage at Miami were 62, 54 and 52. Again, that is what you call a decline. The starting quarterbacks at CSU during that time were 64, 62 and 61, respectively.
Again, please take your L and move along.
I sure wish Auburn had held on to Morris. That was fun.
Just when you think firing Muschamp will make this team better. Welcome to another year of irrelevance.
Irrelevance is a username of “flash” with no avatar.
Maybe he will come to Bama. We need one for 2022.
24/7 scouting report says he needs big balls.
Come on to a winning program. Smart choose young man. Roll Tide
Choice typo
The Gamecocks of South Carolina need players…lots of players. With the opt-outs/transfers/NFL bound players the cupboard is not exactly fully-stocked. The Cocks immediate future is about one word & that’s recruiting.
If Beamer can create a more positive locker room atmosphere, that’ll go along way in healing the program from that disease called “Will”.
Agreed AFan. South Carolina was hurting long before Will Muschamp got sacked. Beamer came in late and will not be expected to perform miracles right away, but he has always been an excellent recruiter and knows the South Carolina region. Gonna have to rely on JUCO transfers and any other transfer portal players he can get. New names crop up all the time. At least we have a few creampuff NC games next season. It’s going to be a process. I just hope he surrounds himself with a solid coaching staff.
