Kansas sports betting is live after becoming legal in September 2022. Governor Laura Kelley signed SB 84 into law back on May 12, 2022, officially legalizing sports betting in the state, with both retail and online sports betting launching in September of the same year.

The bill went into effect on July 1, 2022, and paved the way for Kansas sports betting to become legal. Both online and retail sportsbooks are now available to bettors in the Sunflower State, and the early returns have certainly been promising.

Popular online sportsbooks like DraftKings Kansas or FanDuel Sportsbook have been off to a fast start, providing new users with some of the most generous sign-up offers in the industry.

Before everything got started in Kansas, there were a number of difficult hurdles that needed to be cleared, including the passing of legislation and the signing of that legislation into law. The excitement built to an all-time high before the official launch of Kansas sports betting.

Originally, there was optimism that Kansas could give the green light to online sports betting operators in the early onset of 2022, but the start date eventually arrived in the closing weeks of Q3 2022, to the delight of so many enthused sports fans. When Kansas gave the go-ahead to online sports betting operators, players were able to create legal sports betting accounts to wager on both professional and collegiate sports.

Let’s dive into how Kansas online sports betting has gotten to this point, as well as which legal online sportsbooks have ultimately gone live in the Sunflower State.

Note: If you are located in a state where online sports betting is legal and live, you can access any of the promos and bonuses listed below.

Players must be at least 21 years of age and be physically located within the state borders of Kansas. Other personal information will also be needed in order to establish a new sportsbook account. This includes:

Some sportsbooks may require further proof of identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or social security card prior to activating an account.

How to Sports Bet in Kansas

Similar to other legal states, sports betting in Kansas follows similar process for both depositing and withdrawing funds. Not only that, there are also a wide range of different sports and games types that players are able to place bets on, providing plenty of choice to gamble on your favourite teams.

SB 84 set parameters as to how many legal online sportsbooks could potentially launch in the state. Each of the state’s four casinos can partner with up to three sportsbook operators for online sports betting. As such, there could be as many as 12 legal online sportsbooks in Kansas at the same time. As of August 2022, each casino has already partnered up with at least one sportsbook. Here are the current partnerships:

Deposit Methods

Most legal online sportsbooks offer the same deposit methods, though some legislation prohibits the use of credit cards for funding a sportsbook account. That is not the case in Kansas. Once online sports betting goes live in the Sunflower State, players will be able to fund their accounts using:

Available Bet Types

Kansas Online Sports Betting History

SB 84 Introduced to the Senate

The introduction of SB 84 came back on January 26, 2021. As was the case with sports betting legislation in other states, SB 84 had to be amended multiple times before a consensus was reached.

Progress Made, Bill Stalls

In March 2021, SB 84 bounced around from the Committee on Federal and State Affairs to the Committee of the Whole. The bill ended up being amended multiple times, but the failed to be passed.

SB 84 Reappears in 2022

Nearly a year after failing to pass, an amended version of the bill passed. Eventually, both the House and Senate adopted the Conference Committee report, paving the way for the legislation to end up on the desk of Governor Laura Kelly. Before the legislation could become law, it would need to be signed by the governor.

Governor Kelly Signs SB 84 Into Law

On May 12, 2022, just six days after the legislation was presented to her, Governor Laura Kelly signed SB 84 into law. Consequently, many bettors expected to be able to wager on sports immediately. Despite the legalization of sports betting, no timeline was set for the launch of betting in the state.

Kansas Online Betting Tax Revenue

One of the biggest talking points pertaining to the legalization of online sports betting revolves around how much tax revenue can be generated.

The tax rate varies quite a bit from state to state as a state like New York was able to negotiate a higher rate than a smaller state like West Virginia. In the case of Kansas, the tax rate of 10% is the same for online sports betting as well as retail sports betting.

It’s hard to predict how much tax revenue will be generated. The NFL season is typically when sportsbooks see a massive uptick in betting-handle and wagers. Given that Kansas went live with online betting ahead of the 2022-23 NFL regular season, one could imagine a scenario in which Kansas pulls in a total handle of around $100m, which would generate about $10m in tax revenue. We are still waiting to see how Kansas performed across the 2022-23 NFL season.

One the flip side, the other main sportsbook which include Barstool SportsbookBetMGM, and Caesars ended up paying out more in winnings than bets placed. With the Superbowl being the main betting event of the year, this represents a disappointing result across February and these sportsbooks will likely look to review their offerings ahead of the 2024 Superbowl.

Anyone expecting Kansas to do something like $500m in total handle in their first year should likely temper their expectations. This is mainly down to the lack of in-state professional sports teams (only Kansas City Chiefs – NFL and Kansas City Royals – MLB) that will likely limit the potential betting market, especially when compared to other states such as New York.

Additionally, one big question that needs to be answered is whether Kansas will see a larger-than-usual boom when college basketball begins. Given that the Kansas Jayhawks are one of the biggest contenders every year, it’s likely that bettors in the Sunflower State will activate at that time.
