This isn’t the way Gus Malzahn envisioned his UCF head coaching career starting.

First of all, the UCF-Boise State game was delayed for over an hour in Orlando due to weather. Then, the game finally started, and UCF drove 62 yards on its opening drive. The Knights ended up driving all the way down to Boise State’s 8-yard-line.

Then, the unthinkable happened. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who was recently named the best college player in the state of Florida, threw a 100-yard pick-6 to give Boise State the early 7-0 lead.

Boise State took a commanding 21-0 lead before Malzahn and UCF rallied. Gabriel, who had the costly mistake at the goal line, ended up throwing for 318 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

From the second quarter on, UCF out-scored Boise State 36-17 and pulled out the victory 36-31.

Malzahn was victorious in his UCF debut. Thankfully, the first drive pick-6 will be forgotten in lieu of the Week 1 win.
