After Michigan’s loss to heavy underdog Michigan State, fans were calling for Jim Harbaugh to be fired. While it remains to be seen what Michigan will do, it appears their coach is at least contemplating going back to the NFL.

According to Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel, there’s an indication that Harbaugh will listen to pro suitors if they come calling.

“Buzz is filtering through NFL front offices that Harbaugh is open to return to the league,” Thamel said.

The Texans and Falcons currently have openings, while the Jaguars and Jets are other teams that could find themselves in need of a new coach.

“If Jim Harbaugh is available and he’s willing to coach in the NFL, I’m 1,000% positive there will be a market for him,” NBC Sports analyst/former 49ers safety Donte Whitner said.

Harbaugh has amassed a disappointing 48-19 record in six season at Michigan. Prior to taking the job at his alma mater, Harbaugh went 44-19 in a four-year stint with the 49ers, including a Super Bowl appearance.

While there’s chatter about Harbaugh making the switch, some insiders are still scratching their heads.

And that brings into focus the fascinating question of whether an NFL franchise would be tempted by the duality of Harbaugh’s NFL tenure – a track record of winning that came with significant headaches.

“I just don’t hear his name out there anywhere,” said an industry source. “I would be surprised if it happens.”

Michigan lost to Michigan State despite being a 24-point favorite. The slate doesn’t get any easier for Harbaugh, as Michigan faces upstart Indiana this Saturday.

If Michigan underperforms this season, it’ll certainly be curious to see how everything shakes out.
