Johnny Manziel’s first career CFL start was nothing short of a nightmare.

By halftime, Manziel had thrown for just 90 yards and a CFL 2018-high four INTs. His team (Montreal Alouettes) was losing 38-3, and things didn’t get better in the second half. The Alouettes ended up losing 50-11 to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Manziel was removed from the game in the fourth quarter. He finished just 11-of-20 for 104 yards, including the four first-half INTs.

He met with media members following the game to discuss the disastrous start.

“I felt I just made some uncharacteristic plays today, and you know, this game is humbling,” Manziel told ESPN’s Sam Khan Jr. “This is a humbling experience. I’ve had this experience in the past before, and there’s two ways you either go about this moving forward. One, you can let this get you down and sulk … and harm you moving forward. The other way is to just take this on the chin like a man and never allow this taste to creep back in your mouth again and never let this happen again.”

Manziel was recently traded from the Tiger-Cats to the Alouettes, and in his defense, he hasn’t had much time to practice with his new teammates or learn the complete playbook. So, it was a perfect storm of sorts that just never got better.

Yes, he did flash some escapability that made him famous in college, but he also made some bone-headed passes.

“It was just a bad day,” Manziel said. “Those days happen in football. [You] learn from them, because I don’t want to have this feeling again. It sucks. Nevertheless, I don’t think this defines me coming up here as a CFL player. I don’t think one game, good, bad, indifferent, or anything makes your career. If I would’ve been judged after one game at Texas A&M, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Hopefully, Manziel has the mind of a relief pitcher, because he’ll need it moving forward. He just has to make much better decisions with the football.
