Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso reacted to Texas A&M’s upset loss against Appalachian State during Saturday’s College GameDay.

GameDay is in Boone, N.C., for the first time, a week after the Mountaineers stunned the Aggies 17-14 at Kyle Field. While it didn’t eclipse the program’s landmark victory over then-No. 5 Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2007, it was still a major upset win for Shawn Clark’s team.

Meanwhile, the Aggies are 1-1 and may have seen their College Football Playoff hopes go down the drain. They host Miami as Max Johnson is in line for his first start in an A&M uniform against the program his uncle, Mark Richt, played for and later coached.

“(Jimbo Fisher) has no one to blame,” Corso said. “Now, he’s in his fifth year at A&M and he should be humming right now. And listen, the Aggie performance last week was mediocre at best. But, having said that, he has a 10-year contract. He has time, I think. He’ll be alright.”

Herbstreit pinpointed the reasons why he thought the Aggies haven’t lived up to expectations thus far in 2022.

“I think, right now, if you look at Texas A&M, there’s a couple things,” he said. “The defense is playing well. The offense, they don’t have an identity, they’re not executing well. Incredibly young everywhere, including quarterback. Now they’re gonna bring in Max Johnson, we’ll see if that will help them out.

“The other thing is…unwarranted preseason hype! No. 6, high expectations for a team that did not deserve that. They beat Alabama last year, they have all these great recruits, and all of a sudden, everybody thinks they’re Alabama. It doesn’t work like that.”

Kickoff between the Aggies and Hurricanes is set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
