Jimbo Fisher basically laughed off rumors that had him leaving Texas A&M and going to Baton Rouge. Despite the relationship with former AD Scott Woodward, who brought Fisher to College Station and is now heading up the LSU athletic program, Fisher thought the rumors were absurd.

He said he’d have to be the dumbest person alive to leave now. He said Texas A&M is building something big. We’re beginning to see that now.

The Early Signing Period began Wednesday and Fisher wasted little time in taking advantage. He forewarned us that the Aggies were about to land a historic class. He wasn’t kidding. As of midday Wednesday, the 2022 Texas A&M Signing Class jockeyed with Alabama for the No. 2 ranking nationally, according to 247sports.com, behind only Georgia.

That’s right, the Aggies ranked right up there with the SEC perennial power Tide. It’s not only on the football field but off it as well, that the Aggies could be taking the lead. That shot heard round the college football world, a.k.a. the 28-yard field goal by Seth Small that gave the Aggies a 41-38 victory over the Tide, is having ripple effects.

If it isn’t already, this could be the greatest signing class in Aggie football history, with 5-star quarterback Connor Weigman staying in state and leading the way. Weigman is ranked No. 2 in the country at his position and could be the final piece of the puzzle for Fisher and a championship program at Texas A&M.

He’s 1 of 3 5-star recruits who have signed their LOI.

Defensive lineman Walter Nolen waited a bit longer, but he’s the headliner. He’s the No. 2 prospect in the nation and ranks as the highest all-time signee at Texas A&M. The 6-4, 325-pound Nolen has a rating of 0.9998, which tops that of Myles Garrett’s (class of 2014) all-time top score (0.9993) at Texas A&M.

Defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy, from Florida, is the other 5-star. The Aggies also signed 4-star DL Anthony Lucas, giving them 3 of the best defensive linemen in the country — in the same class.

That’s why there’s a solid chance that before it’s all done and the ink is dried, Texas A&M could have the top signing class in the country. That’s what Fisher was talking about.

Evan Stewart is the No. 2-ranked wide receiver in the country and another 5-star hard commit for Texas A&M.

Now the rankings don’t factor in 4 more 5-star recruits who either lean toward Texas A&M or have the Aggies in their top choice list. And that’s where it gets real interesting.

Linebacker Harold Perkins is one of those expected to sign with the Aggies. Perkins is ranked No. 1 nationally at his position and the top overall recruit in Texas. Another 5-star lean for the Aggies is DL Shemar Stewart, ranked as the top overall recruit out of the state of Florida. Neither is expected to sign this week. So they, too, won’t become official until the February signing period.

Corner Denver Harris is a 5-star CB from Houston (North Shore), ranked No. 3 in the country at his position. Harris is leaning toward Texas A&M over Texas and Alabama.

(The Aggies missed out on another 5-star recruit when No. 1 safety Kamari Wilson picked Florida.)

If the Aggies can finish strong, this recruiting class could be one for the ages. It’s why Fisher shrugged off not only the rumors but any offers Woodward may or may not have tempted Fisher with depending on which source you run with.

In any case, wherever this class finally ends up in the rankings, one thing is certain: It’s the boldest move to date in Fisher’s tenure at Texas A&M. It softens the blow of a somewhat disappointing 8-4 finish to the 2021 regular season and shines a much brighter light on the Aggies’ Playoff hopes moving forward.
