Texas A&M is reportedly pulling the plug on the Jimbo Fisher era with the Aggies with reports of Fisher’s firing coming out after Week 11. The Aggies were in Year 6 under Fisher, but the team did not capitalize on the early success of Fisher’s tenure.

After a pair of 9-win seasons during his first 3 years at the helm, Fisher has produced 19 total wins in the 3 seasons since the 2020 campaign. That includes a 5-7 record last season and a 6-4 record entering Week 12 of 2023.

Overall, Fisher went 45-25 in his time with the Aggies, and that .643 winning percentage trailed that of Kevin Sumlin who went 51-26 (.662) in 6 seasons at Texas A&M.

Now, the Aggies will turn their attention to finding the next head coach, and some early names to watch were mentioned by Andy Staples with On3 Sports. While this group of coaches would require buyouts to leave their current schools, Staples pointed to Oregon’s Dan Lanning, Washington’s Kalen DeBoer and Duke’s Mike Elko as sitting head coaches that could be attractive.

DeBoer might be a reach for now with most of his time as a head coach spent on the West Coast. However, Lanning and Elko might be notable targets due to their connections to the SEC.

Lanning has gone 19-4 with the Ducks since taking over the program ahead of the 2022 season. Prior to that, he made his rise as a key piece of Kirby Smart’s coaching staff from 2018-21.

For Elko, he is 15-8 overall in 2 seasons with the Blue Devils and made the move to Duke after his time at Texas A&M. He served as DC for the Aggies from 2018-21.

Another name to potentially watch would be former Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Though Meyer has bucked the idea of returning to coaching publicly, that could change if Texas A&M comes calling with a big-time contract.
