You know summer has arrived once the annual college football preview magazines begin to hit the shelves. With Athlon Sports and Lindy’s Sports both having published their 2018 editions, it is time for college football junkies to dive in for some summer reading.

The latest edition of the Athlon Sports magazine can be purchased online here, while the Lindy’s Sports magazine can be ordered here. Both magazines are also currently found at bookstores and newsstands.

One of the best sections of the magazines come from unnamed coaches that open up due to the anonymity they are promised. For Tennessee fans, the comments provided in the 2018 preseason magazines are both revealing and tough to read. Much like you’ve probably heard all offseason, Tennessee is expected to struggle on the field in 2018. That’s something these coaches obviously agree with based on their comments.

Here are some of the quotes provided regarding Tennessee in the Athlon Sports magazine:

“There are some really good quarterbacks in this league, and not many were more highly ranked than Jarrett Guaratano. But he sure didn’t play very well last year when he got a chance. He holds onto the ball too long and takes some unnecessary hits. He has to step his game up… It will be interesting to see what they do with Tyson Helton as the coordinator. I think they are going to more of a pro-style or traditional offense. We’ll see if that fits with what Guarantano can do well… Coach (Jeremy) Pruitt and Kevin Sherrer are obviously very good defensive coaches. It will be interesting to see how they transition to what Tennessee has done in the past few years to their scheme… They have a good player in Nigel Warrior. He’s someone they can build around… Darrin Kirkland is a key guy at linebacker. If he comes back from injury, he has the potential to be an upper-level SEC linebacker. But other than that, I don’t see a lot of playmakers on that defense.”

The Lindy’s Sports magazine offers much the same on Tennessee:

The quotes provided go all-in on how terrible Butch Jones is currently perceived in the SEC. Of course, the former Tennessee coach is currently rehabbing his image at the Nick Saban School for Interns Who Can’t Coach Good and Want to Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too:

Goodness, that’s a scathing review. Can you argue with those comments as Tennessee is coming off its first 0-8 record in school history?
