Tennessee’s spring camp kicks off Tuesday but before the Vols hit the field, the team will be without eight key players, head coach Butch Jones revealed Monday during his spring introductory press conference.

Safety Micah Abernathy, defensive back Rashaan Gaulden, defensive lineman Kyle Phillips, defensive tackle Shy Tuttle, receiver Josh Smith, defensive tackle Kendal Vickers, receiver Brandon Johnson, and offensive lineman Brett Kendrick were all listed by Jones as “out” for the spring — while other unnamed players would be limited.

“We need to get them back at full strength,” Jones said. “I do think there will be competition (regardless of the injuries).”

Jones also noted that under the leadership and guidance of new head strength and conditioning coach Rock Gulickson the team expects all those players to return to full health over the summer.
