Butch Jones rules eight players out for Tennessee’s spring

Tennessee’s spring camp kicks off Tuesday but before the Vols hit the field, the team will be without eight key players, head coach Butch Jones revealed Monday during his spring introductory press conference.

Safety Micah Abernathy, defensive back Rashaan Gaulden, defensive lineman Kyle Phillips, defensive tackle Shy Tuttle, receiver Josh Smith, defensive tackle Kendal Vickers, receiver Brandon Johnson, and offensive lineman Brett Kendrick were all listed by Jones as “out” for the spring — while other unnamed players would be limited.

“We need to get them back at full strength,” Jones said. “I do think there will be competition (regardless of the injuries).”

Jones also noted that under the leadership and guidance of new head strength and conditioning coach Rock GulicksonĀ the team expects all those players to return to full health over the summer.

  • Tennessee had major issues with injuries last season. The biggest things to accomplish this spring are to find a QB, and stay or get healthy.

    • Hopefully the addition of a proven S&C coach and actually having a QB coach will alleviate those problems this year. I feel good about Rock, the QB coach still remains to be seen however.

  • Butch Jones is a goober

  • So basically you just going to have a bunch of three stars out there competing against each other spring should make for a very interesting season a losing one

  • My prediction for this season coming is it going to be worse than Derek Dooley years Tennessee is just going downhill only thing they got going for them is women’s softball because they’re good coaches and recruiter . Butch , Holly , Barns , Baseball , and Track couches and Tennessee shouldn’ hired Blackburn 10 waiting for Tennessee to get their head out of their ass start replacing great coaches for great coaches not left overs and a buddy buddy system all my Tennessee stuff goes in the closet and now to find another team that’s not in the SEC

    • Great. Enjoy your new team. Please stop commenting on Tennessee articles as well and don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.
