Longtime Knoxville News Sentinel newspaper columnist John Adams said he’s never seen anything quite like Tennessee fans’ anger and disapproval toward current Volunteers head coach Butch Jones.

Adams said these times are even tougher for Vols fans than the end days of former head coach Derek Dooley in 2012.

“[I’ve] been here 30 years and I’ve never seen the fan base so enraged,” Adams told the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum on Monday. “Butch Jones’ approval rating is lower than Dooley’s ever was.”

That is certainly not a good sign for Jones, as Dooley is typically viewed as the worst head coach in the history of Tennessee Football.

Dooley was 15-21 in his three years at Tennessee. Jones has a 33-23 record in five years as the Vols’ head coach.

At least Jones has beaten six Top 25 teams in that span of time. Dooley never beat a single one.

Still, fans in Knoxville are nothing short of “enraged” at this point.

Tennessee is 3-2 overall and winless in the SEC. The Vols will rest up on a much-needed open date this week before hosting South Carolina on Oct. 14.
