Jeremy Pruitt getting roasted after loss to Arkansas
Jeremy Pruitt’s Tennessee Volunteers came out and laid an egg against Arkansas Saturday night and lost 24-13.
The Vols had a week off to prepare for the Hogs, and it didn’t necessarily show. Before leaving with a head injury, quarterback Jarrett Guarantano finished with just 42 yards passing. Backup signal caller Brian Maurer didn’t fare much better, as he missed on all 4 of his attempts. Freshman Harrison Bailey’s first pass was intercepted, along with a second to end the game.
Arkansas (and former Gators) quarterback Feleipe Franks finishes his college career 3-0 against the Vols. He finished Saturday 18-of-24 for 215 yards and 3 passing touchdowns.
Following the loss to Arkansas, Pruitt was roasted on social media:
Just awful, awful game management by Jeremy Pruitt. What the hell was that?

Lol year 1 Sam Pittman just embarrassed year 3 Jeremy Pruitt

Jeremy Pruitt is about to find out what it feels like to have lost the confidence of Vol nation. Wouldn’t want to be him right now because absolutely no one wants him as coach.

24 unanswered to Arkansas.
17 unanswered to Kentucky TWICE.
24 unanswered to Georgia.
Somebody convince me that Jeremy #Pruitt knows how to coach an SEC team.

Jeremy Pruitt telling @SECNetwork that he’s not going to play Harrison Bailey so he doesn’t put him in harms way. Meanwhile Pruitt is perfectly fine crushing all hope & the spirits of all Vols fans playing Maurer. #smh

Jeremy Pruitt would have kept Josh Dobbs on the bench until his junior year.

Jeremy Pruitt has kicked every hard working Tennessee bettor right in the testicles tonight

I’m sure glad we gave Jeremy Pruitt and extension. I’d hate to lose him to a team wanting to lose more than Tennessee.

Butch Jones a better coach than Jeremy Pruitt? It’s a fair question.

Jim Chaney is trash can juice. Jeremy Pruitt needs canned tomorrow.

Jeremy Pruitt’s handling of the QB situation has been such a disaster. This offense is toast.

Jeremy Pruitt. More like Jeremy blew it.

Butch Jones > Jeremy Pruitt

I like to imagine a scenario in my head where Rick Barnes brushes by Jeremy Pruitt in passing and says, “Let me show you how it’s done.” Anyone else imagine this too? #vfl #gbo 🍊

Arkansas offensive coordinator Kendall Briles is coaching circles around Jeremy Pruitt.

Jeremy Pruitt may be a worse coaching hire than Derek Dooley

Jeremy Pruitt was doing such a good job until teams realized he doesn’t have a QB who can actually play
— James (@Mussallem) November 8, 2020
.Ark definitely made better half time adjustments. Congrats to the hogs.
Chump better? Ha no way!! He should just stay home and we have a weekly guest coach raffle to help pay off his buy out.
That’s a great idea. Auburn would like to do the same but they would have to sell a trillion raffle tickets. Lol.
First congrats to Arkansas. The better team clearly won.
Everything everyone said in all those quotes is right on the money. I was wondering if Pruitt would turn out to be muschamp II but I think muschamp may be better. Pruitt is clearly not ready for P5 HC job. I was hoping he would start putting it together and really thought this was a 5 year rebuild from the get-go but you can’t go 2 or 3-7 in year 3 (beating vandy is no guarantee) you just can’t. Sorry but time to go.
Muschamp — just as bad — makes millions but can’t coach a lick
I’ve always had this theory that, by and large, defensive coordinators simply don’t make good head coaches. From a Gator’s perspective, we saw how Ron Zook and Will Muschamp fared. Muschamp hasn’t changed much at South Carolina, and we see how Pruitt is doing right now.
I dunno, maybe I should do a study on this, but there seems to be some aspect of coordinating an offense that better prepares a coach for running an entire team.
Don’t forget Mike Dubose!
Although Mike Shula might throw a wrench in there. Just as bad if not worse than dubose!
With all the twitter flitter…I gotta say, that was the WORST fake injury I have ever seen. The guy has watched too much flopping in BB games. And I understand the fans are FREEZE-ing for a change.
I think he’ll be there or at Vandy.
Not difficult making adjustments against UT’s offense. Run blitz. How they couldn’t stop thrm early is a mystery. Whether it was gonna be a run to the left or to the right was all to figure out.
Oh…I think Freeze will have much better offers than Vandy, no offense intended Vandy. I just think Freeze will be getting some calls this fall. Bet MSU wishes they had waited a year to make a move. Freeze is a Mississippi boy, went to Southern Miss. Coached high school for years in the Memphis area.
0% chance that Vandy hires Hugh Freeze. Little chance that UT would hire him either. Vandy is the only FBS school that could go 0-10 with a 7th year coach that never had a winning record and not fire him. Tennessee will go after Luke Fickell or maybe someone like Paul Chryst or Dave Clawson. Freeze has too much negative SEC history with the violations at Ole Miss and the ladies of the evening issue.
Luke will go to Michigan if he leaves. Nobody wants the UT job.
Seriously! With the way he flopped, you’d think you were watching a soccer game with extra padding.
Congrats to Arkansas. Well played and well coached.
But what a disgrace.
We are truly the laughing stock if the SEC.
Pruitt is completely in over his head. Of course he will make excuses and blame everyone else. But its all on him .
Nobody does less with more except Kirby Smart.
Its amazing what real coaches
can do. Look at Pittman, Dan Mulen, Tom Allen, Chris Peterson. Guys that are able to elevate the level of play from their guys.
The wheels are getting ready to fall off in Knoxville
I remember UTs best team under Butch. They were in every game except Alabama, and the Vols were decimated with injuries for that game. (2016) Pruitt has been fortunate with injuries over his three years. With two weeks to prepare, that was a joke of a gameplan.
Not a pretty sight. I read a comment earlier this week from one of their fans who said Tennessee was a second half team. I was wondering if we have two Tennessees because the first one laid an egg in the second half.
@mike I was a student at the time….the terrible loss to Florida at home, the blow out Georgia. I went through two girlfriends during the span of this terribleness.. butch sucked. UT admins have sucked. Haslams have ruined UT.
Man, I dunno what to do or think anymore. It’s sad…I see two more wins, if that…
TWO WINS!? You’re dreaming. We’ll be lucky to win one more against Vandy.
You beat us. At least you have that going for you.
Fulmer needs to stop hiring fat slobs just because they remind him of himself. There’s more to coaching than eating donuts.
Fulmer needs to go as well.
“We are truly the laughing stock if the SEC.” Don’t be trying to take our crown. Go Cocks!
Much deserved to Arkansas. They are on a mission this year. They played great after the half. Much deserved army nation.
Arky nation***
Give me Liberty or give me…(aw just send him on over).
Hahah…you’re not wrong..
I know Butch sucked at the end, but he did have a good team with Dobbs, underused Kamara, Barnette, etc. Former Titan GM Floyd Reese was saying this Pruitt team has “a lot” of NFL talent. He tried to say Jones never had the kind of NFL level talent this team had. I was like WTF is he talking about.
Butch sucked the whole time. He underused Kamara and ran off Hurd. He got lucky against Georgia and never did anything with Bama or the Gators. Bama looks REAL STRONG, but heed my advice. Get rid of Butch. His mere presence dumbs down the Bama staff. You will not win a NC with him in your program. He’s poison.
So did Pruitt fire any of the coaching staff midway through the game… asking for a friend.
I wondered if Pruitt would fire himself.
Okay, I’ll stop joking around especially given how the Vols have dominated my Cats over the last 20 or 30 or 40 years… but who’s counting.
After thinking about the Brumbaugh firing what got me was Pruitt’s statement:
“Sometimes from a philosophical standpoint, things are just not a fit, and it just didn’t work out for us, so I decided to do that.”
So if I’m understanding Pruitt’s statement correctly he didn’t agree with Brumbaugh’s philosophy. I’m making the assumption he meant ‘defensive’ philosophy. If so, here’s my problem/question; why didn’t Pruitt have a better understanding of Brumbaugh’s philosophy before he hired him? Brumbaugh has been around for a while so there has to be plenty of tape on how he has his d-line play. I also have to ask didn’t Pruitt talk with some people who had coached with or played for Brumbaugh? All coaching hires are important but given the importance of line play in the SEC one would have to think Pruitt would have put more thought into the hire. That’s just my thoughts… not talking smack or anything.
Guys, in all fairness to Pruitt, Pitmans Hogs are a much better team than they get credit for being. Vols definitely should have won that game. But, w/o a viable option at QB For UT (we know something about that) Arky wasn’t going to be an easy out.
Uncle rico, more like in Smart’s defense, he planned on Newman or Daniels to be the starter. Nobody could foresee what would happen. Pruitt’s plan was….wait, what was Pruitt’s plan?
Nice to see that someone else gets it! Everybody acts if Smart knew that Fromm was leaving early, Newman would quit and Daniels would not be medically ready. Not mention that Mathis missed an entire year with brain issue and had no spring practice with a brand new OC.
social media: it gives a otherwise person with little or no opinion a forum. shame on you for publishing crap
Some coaches just arent HC. Some shouldnt be SEC assistants (Morris). Here is the difference between say Barry Odom and the Pruitt experiment. Odom never had the recruiting base that Pruitt has had, not even close. Yet overall the records arent so much different. That’s more telling about whether a coach can ever try again to be a HC. And with offense replacing defense as the “you win with..” thing, I just dont know. Even with Arkansas’ improvement this year, can it be sustained and elevated if your assistants are getting hired away (see LSU for a glaring example). At Missouri, if they in the near future string together some 8-4 and 9-3 seasons..will the calls start coming if they finish 10-2 or 11-2? An elite program with a strong recruiting base will be hard to ignore.
We just played Tennessee at the wrong time. There’s no doubt Mizzou could beat this team quite easily with Bazelak now starting and now that TN has come back down to earth after their hot streak.
I believe that Jeremy Pruitt & Kirby Smart both took that online-course titled “How to mis-manage Quarterbacks”. And they both got the grade of “A”.
I’m not sure it’s mismanagement as much as their QB’s just aren’t very good. It’s kind of like saying the Buc’s just mismanaged Winston when the reality is he’s just not very good.
The media was pumping y’all up Big Time after you beat us last year saying Tenn is BACK!!! Y’all just didn’t realize how bad Chump has made us. This is not taking a stab at y’all either because we are so bad I have nothing to talk smack about.
Hard to win without a QB. Our team is disaster right now. JP and Kirby don’t have any answers. Now we don’t have any receivers(again) and our defense is decimated with injuries.Any of the teams we beat up till now could beat us if we played again. Right now in Sec it seems every game not involving Alabama is a toss up. I am also losing faith in Defensive minded HCs. It’s an offense driven game now. The old run first, stop run philosophy doesn’t work anymore.
Tennessee has yet to make a good half time adjustment this entire season. The two games they won they managed to just grind out the rest of the game and hold on. South Carolina was as lucky as it gets and Missouri just hadn’t figured themselves out yet. Pruitt should start Bailey the rest of the season. It won’t cost him anything. He says he doesn’t want HB to get banged up. He realizes this isn’t tennis right? There are other teams in the SEC that have the same issue but they have better talent and more depth to keep them competitive. And I swear, if Chaney keeps calling runs up the middle, I think I am going to lose it. Somebody needs to tell him that the opponents have figured out the game plan.
The above is dead on. What should also bother the Pruitt defenders, is how poorly prepared Mauer looked. I refuse to compare Smart to Pruitt because Smart lost a junior to the NFL who should have stayed, had a starting quit “opt out” and a transfer not get medically cleared as expected. What is Pruitt’s excuse?
Pruitt is riding the JG train hard and I don’t know why. He’s put all of his eggs into that basket. This season is a lost cause. Start Bailey and let him take his licks behind a decent line. JG was getting absolutely whooped last year. The O-Line is improved but not on par with where people thought they would be. Bailey has the chance to play some top tier SEC talent in the next 4 weeks and Pruitt would be a fool to let him miss out on that opportunity. What’s the worst that can happen other than injury, we lose? That’s gonna happen already. Smart > Pruitt. I said it. It hurts to say but I said it. He can coach both sides of the ball and JP is just a defensive mind. I’m not sure Chaney and Martin are good fits in the Pruitt system. Not saying they are bad coaches, just not picking up what JP is putting down. This season is Alabama’s to lose in the SEC (insert curse words of choice here).
It doesn’t matter, they are basically Vanderbilt
Tenn recruits well and should be getting better results. If Arkansas can turn around and play respectable in year one of a new HC and staff there’s no excuse for Tenn not to be better. Resources, $, fan support, facilities, recruiting are all on par or better than their foes. Must be the coaching, possibly the admin too.
Is it me or does it seem offensive minded head coaches leave the defense alone and former DC’s think they can run the whole team. I bet Kiffin hardly bothers the DC.
What a sad little team and fan base
You do realize that you were an NFL trade away from being irrelevant for the past 2 decades right? If Saban had got Brees to the Dolphins instead of Cunningham, you guys would be the TN of the West today. Let’s face it, you’re probably a decade away from that anyways. You’re gonna keep smacking people in the face till Saban is gone. That’s what’s going to happen. Everybody knows it. Nick Saban IS Alabama. Look at his coordinators. They can’t beat him. He drives that program. When he is done, Alabama is done. It won’t happen overnight, but I fully expect a 3-4 loss season right after he retires.
I saw someone mentioning runs up the middle. You know Chaney did that at UGA too. Also, does your tight ends ever get thrown to? Chaney tries to milk every lead by running clock. It never worked for us. He is like The John Chavis of offense. Few good years by stellar players then mostly sux because he can’t adapt. We almost lost to Nicholls in 2016 and you did lose to Ga State last year. Tried to warn you about Chaney. Also he had a hand to play in the Fields drama too. He is a cancer you can’t afford.
It makes a difference when you have a duo like Sony Michel and Nick Chubb pushing you down the field. It makes you look like some offensive mastermind. Chandler and Gray are good, but not as good as those guys. Chaney is very single minded and everybody knows it. Fulmer started running into the same problem at the end of his coaching career and I believe that lead to him being fired. The biggest difference between teams like Alabama and Tennessee is the Finish Him mentality. Alabama will be up by 50 and if you have a penalty then Saban will eat your lunch. Play for a full 60 minutes. TN pulls back and tries to preserve leads and it rarely works. This is a frustrating fan base to be a part of.
