Tennessee currently does not have a cornerback committed or signed in its 2018 recruiting class. Considering the defense will be undergoing a major transition under Jeremy Pruitt, that’s not great news.

That being said, things could soon be changing for the Vols as California defensive back Olaijah Griffin recently visited Knoxville and came away very impressed. Even more recently, trending Louisiana cornerback Eddie Smith visited Rocky Top over the weekend and the visit left a clear impression on him.

A native of Slidell, La., Smith has elevated Tennessee to the top of his list despite recently landing a scholarship offer from Alabama. After leaving his official visit, Smith indicated the Vols are the No. 1 team on his list with just over three weeks remaining until National Signing Day according to Jesse Simonton of Volquest, the Tennessee Rivals site.

Here’s Smith’s reaction to that tweet:

Before Tennessee fans can celebrate, it should be noted that Smith still plans to take two more official visits before signing on the first Wednesday of February. Smith will visit Starkville next weekend before seeing Tuscaloosa on the final weekend of the contact period. Whichever way he’s leaning, it appears Smith will either be playing for Tennessee or against them in the coming seasons.

Considering the lack of experience returning at the cornerback position for the Vols, this position could very well prove to be the storyline of signing day for Pruitt’s first Tennessee recruiting class.
