Many Tennessee fans are tired of coach Butch Jones, especially after the Volunteers have gotten off to an 0-4 start in SEC play.

At the moment, it seems as if Jones’s only supporter is Tennessee AD John Currie, as a different AD likely would have already given the struggling coach a pink slip.

However, ESPN host Paul Finebaum doesn’t see a move being made this week, especially now that Sunday has come and gone.

On WJOX’s “The Morning Drive” on Monday, Finebaum said Jones is inevitably going to be fired at some point, saying it’s unfair for the players to have to deal with this situation.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that Butch Jones will be fired at some point,” he said. “When is that time? There’s a lot of speculation that the university is waiting because of a clause in the contract that means that they would pay him less money if he is ineligible to go to a bowl game.

“From my standpoint, that is ridiculous. He is a failed football coach. … There’s no philosophy, direction, definition or character when you watch this team play, and I think he probably should have been fired (Sunday) to end the suspense.

“I don’t think it’s fair to the football players. We still have five or six games left — four or five, whatever it is — to have to deal with this cloud, to have to deal with this coach that everyone knows will not be there.”

However, he continued by explaining why he thinks Jones will still be around to coach at Kentucky this weekend.

“The other side of that is if the administration at Tennessee really believes Jones can run the table and be an 8-4 coach, then all the power to them,” he said.

Tennessee travels to Lexington to take on Kentucky on Saturday. Another ugly loss will only increase the heat on Jones moving forward.
