Tennessee assistant Rob Lanier named head coach of Georgia State

It’s official, Rob Lanier has been named head coach at Georgia State.

The former Tennessee assistant coach spent the previous four seasons with Rick Barnes in Knoxville after previously serving as the head coach ofย Siena. Lanier also coached under Barnes at Texas.

โ€œIn Rob Lanier, weโ€™ve hired a basketball coach who I believe will take Georgia State basketball to the next level,โ€ President Mark Becker said in a released statement. โ€œHe has vast experience coaching in some of the nationโ€™s premier college basketball programs, and he has a deep commitment to developing players as students and athletes. Coach Lanierโ€™s demonstrated record of recruiting top talent, including numerous all-Americans, also bodes well for the future of Panther basketball. I welcome him to Atlanta and the Georgia State family.โ€

Tennessee went 31-6 last season and advanced to the Sweet 16, falling just short of an Elite Eight berth after losing to Purdue in overtime of the NCAA Tournament.
