For the second time this offseason, Tennessee defensive back Shawn Shamburger has made the decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Shamburger initially entered the transfer portal back in January but later pulled his name from the database. Now he’s back in it, as 247Sports was the first to report Shamburger’s decision to reenter the portal this week.

This news comes after Shamburger appeared in just three games for the Volunteers during the 2020 season before making the decision to opt-out for the remainder of the season.

“Shawn is working on academics,” former Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said in a press conference following Shamburger’s decision to opt-out in mid-November. “This has been a very unusual, really circumstance, this whole deal. You try to do school from home, not being in person. Again, when you talk about tutors and things like that. One of the things he’s going to focus on is academics the rest of the semester.”

Shamburger did not appear in another game for Tennessee following these comments from Pruitt.

During the 2019 season, Shamburger was the starting nickel back for Tennessee. For his college career, Shamburger has 86 tackles and one interception.
