UPDATE: The Cleveland Browns have officially announced the hire of John Lilly.

Jeremy Pruitt has had a busy offseason when it comes to hiring coaches, and now it appears he will have a new opening on his staff moving forward.

After serving one season as an analyst for Tennessee, John Lilly is expected to leave Knoxville for the Cleveland Browns. This news was first reported by Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio. Lilly will serve as tight ends coach in Cleveland, per Marvez. This is the same position Lilly held for the Los Angeles Rams in 2016.

Before coaching with the Rams, Lilly worked various offensive roles in Athens, including offensive coordinator, for Mark Richt’s Georgia program.

Not long after Tennessee hired Lilly, Pruitt explained the coach’s hire as a method of keeping an eye on his Tennessee offense without having to do so himself 24/7.

“I think it’s clear that I want to be involved on the defensive side from a daily organization standpoint, but at the same time, we’re not going to do anything our program that I’m not aware about, that it don’t go through me,” Pruitt said regarding Lilly’s hire.

Now that Tennessee has a veteran offensive coordinator on staff in Jim Chaney, the need to have Lilly’s input on the offense on Rocky Top may have been deemed less essential than before by Pruitt. It’s worth noting that Pruitt is a longtime friend and former Alabama teammate of new Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens. The two most certainly had conversations about Lilly prior to this hire being made by the Browns.
