Much of Vol Nation is already firmly in “coaching search” mode, but in case there was anyone wondering if a deal might fall through at the last minute: Tyson Helton is officially the new head coach at Western Kentucky.

WKU’s official Twitter account shared the announcement Tuesday. Helton leaves after serving as Jeremy Pruitt’s offensive coordinator in Year 1.

Many UT fans are wishing Helton the best at his new job, but his departure is unlikely to be mourned. After Saturday night’s loss to Vanderbilt, there were reports that a change would be made at offensive coordinator. Helton leaving on his own, to take a head coaching job, appears to be for the best for both parties.

Helton may one day be back in the SEC considering he WKU job has shown to be a stepping stone. Current Florida State coach Willie Taggart was at WKU before moving on to USF, Oregon and ultimately FSU.
