Derek Mason has announced that he’s taking a sabbatical from coaching. The former Vanderbilt head coach revealed his decision on Twitter. Mason most recently finished a season as Oklahoma State’s defensive coordinator.

“I have been blessed during my tenure at Oklahoma State to work alongside Coach Gundy. His leadership and consistency are unmatched in the profession. To the student-athletes I have had the privilege to coach, your future is strong on and off the field. I valued our time together and love ya!…I wish you all continued success in 2023. God bless. Go Pokes.”

The 53-year-old Mason served as Vanderbilt’s head coach from 2014-20 and compiled a 27-55 record. Mason guided Vanderbilt to bowl appearances in 2016 and 2018 with 6-win seasons. Mason was also Auburn’s defensive coordinator during the 2021 season.
