Mike Wright is the face of Vanderbilt football in 2022. That was very evident by his SEC Media Days appearance in July; however, after a huge Week 0 performance against Hawaii, Wright is certainly the catalyst for the Commodores offense.

The Vandy quarterback racked up 309 total yards with 4 touchdowns — 2 passing and 2 rushing. He led the Commodores offense to its best offensive output in many years. Vanderbilt racked up over 600 yards of total offense, including over 400 rushing yards.

Following the blowout win, Wright told CBS Sports that preparation is the key for Vandy this season.

“I think we just owned into our operation,” Wright said following the win over Hawaii. “That was the game plan coming in. That’s just Vanderbilt football this year. Preparation is everything. We prepared really well, and we put it on display tonight.”

Wright was asked about the team’s identity and what the program is trying to build under Clark Lea.

“Winning is hard,” Wright continued. “That’s what most people don’t realize. I mean, the game of football is amazing, and that’s why I love it so much, but that’s just our identity. That’s what we want to be this year, and we just took a growing step today.

“I’m just really proud of this team.”

Wright and the Commodores are off to a great start, and they will try to continue the high-flying offense in Week 1 against Elon.
