It looks like Kumar Rocker won’t be starting his professional career in the New York Mets farm system. ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel are reporting that “Barring a drastic change between now and the 5 p.m. ET signing deadline, the New York Mets do not plan to sign” the No. 10 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.

According to the ESPN report, there was a deal in place for Rocker to sign for more than $6 million but the Mets but the deal “fell apart” after Rocker’s physical exam. It was previously reported that Rocker is dealing with an elbow issue. If the Mets do not sign Rocker, they would receive the No. 11 pick in the 2022 draft as compensation.

Rocker is coming off of a standout junior season. Rocker made first-team All-SEC this season, posting a 14-4 record and 2.73 ERA in 122 innings over 20 games.

Rocker won his first seven decisions of the 2021 season. In his first SEC start of the season, Rocker posted a season-high 14 strikeouts over 8.0 innings against South Carolina. Rocker had a complete game in the regular season against then-No. 4 and eventual College World Series champion Mississippi State.

It’s not yet known if Rocker will return to Vanderbilt if he does not sign. The ESPN article mentions he could also pursue an independent or international league.
