Vanderbilt defensive back Marlen Sewell has spent 4 seasons with the Vanderbilt football program.
Now, with the Commodores having won the Birmingham Bowl, their first bowl victory and first winning season since 2013, Sewell has reportedly entered the transfer portal. He will have 1 year of eligibility remaining.
Sewell, a Birmingham, Ala., native, was a 3-star recruit out of the class of 2021 when he signed with Vanderbilt. He redshirted his first season, making 4 tackles and appearing in 4 games. In 2022, he saw time in just 3 games.
In 2023, he appeared in every game, making 25 tackles and recovering a fumble. He played in every game once more in 2024, totaling 20 tackles while posting 3 stops in the Birmingham Bowl against Georgia Tech in a 35-27 win in his hometown.
The victory secured 7 wins for the Commodores, their highest total since a 9-win season in 2013 under James Franklin that saw them win the BBVA Compass Bowl and finish ranked in the top 25 for the second straight season. Vandy totaled 9 wins in Clark Lea’s first 3 seasons in Nashville before a 2024 campaign that saw it beat No. 1 Alabama at home while coming away with near-misses against Top 10 Mizzou and Texas.
