Vanderbilt picked up a top-30 player from the state of Maryland when the Commodores on Saturday secured a commitment from Steven Sannieniola, a 3-star defensive back.

The Gaithersburg, Maryland (Quince Orchard) recruit chose Vanderbilt over offers from Purdue and West Virginia. He had a reported 14 offers and made three visits.

“I am going to Nashville, Tenn., and Vanderbilt University,” Sannieniola said, per Vandy247. “They recruited me heavily. (Defensive coordinator) coach (Jesse) Minter got into the job in, I think, January and a couple of weeks later I got the call from him, telling me he wanted me to come to Vanderbilt. Since that day I’ve been in great contact with them. Coach Minter, (assistant) coach (Jovan) Haye, coach (Clark) Lea. Not a day goes by where I don’t have some type of communication with them.”

He’s listed as a safety, and is 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds. Sannieniola is rated the No. 68 player in the class of 2022, and the No. 29 player in the state of Maryland, according to the 247Sports Composite.

“It’s SEC ball,” he said. “We all know that is the best glorified conference in college football. My goal is to try to get to the next level, and also something I can look back on and 40 years from now be, ‘Dang, I am so glad I made a commitment here.’ I feel my top three schools, if I went to any of them, I feel I would have been able to compete at a higher level and fit in because of natural ability.”

Vanderbilt is ranked No. 11 in the SEC in the class of 2022 rankings by 247Sports, and No. 33 in the country. He is the 15th commit in this class.
