Vanderbilt delivered a signature win for first-year head coach Mark Byington, upsetting No. 6 Tennessee in Nashville 76-75.

With Vandy holding a 76-74 lead with 4.7 seconds left, the Commodores’ Tyler Tanner was sent to the free throw line after Chris Manon blocked a potential game-tying shot by Zakai Zeigler. After Tanner missed the front end of a one-on-one, the Volunteers’ Chaz Lanier grabbed the rebound and was inexplicably sent to the line. Lanier made the first but missed the second — but the Vols were unable to regain possession before the clock ran out.

It gave the Commodores a first win over a Top 25 team since the 2022-23 season. Here’s the final seconds of the game:

And Commodores fans stormed the court after taking down their in-state rival:

It’s a great time to be a Vanderbilt fan. The Commodores football team finished 7-6, their best record in over a decade. Now, the men’s basketball team is putting together quite a season of their own. They’re now 15-3 (3-2 SEC), and a program that hasn’t made an NCAA Tournament since 2017 took a massive step in that direction with an upset of the Vols.

After tremendous success at James Madison, Byington’s time with Vandy has gotten off to a great start.
