If you think that because Arkansas and Texas haven’t played since 2008 — and have only met four times since the two teams left the Southwest Conference in 1992 — that the longstanding anger is gone, think again.

Arkansas and Texas have met 77 times. The series dates back to 1894. There have been moments of glory and moments of heartache for both sides.

Such an example is Arkansas’ 42-11 win over then-No. 1 Texas in 1981. Before Arkansas fans daydream back to that October Saturday in ’81, just remember the 15-14 in 1969 — the inaugural “Game of the Century” — loss the second-ranked Razorbacks suffered at the hands of No. 1 Texas. That game led Texas to the ’69 national championship.

There have been numerous roller-coaster moments like that in the life of this rivalry.

The Longhorns opened the series with a 14-game winning streak from 1894-1932. Arkansas won four straight, the most consecutive wins against the Longhorns it has mustered in the series from 1935-1938. Texas has largely dominated the rivalry, with the Hogs sneaking in a win or four periodically.

Arkansas has accomplished some things during 2014. It snapped a 17-game SEC losing streak with an impressive shutout of LSU, and then followed that performance up with a more impressive 30-0 housing of Ole Miss.

But none of that would compare to beating Texas in the Lone Star state.

“We know how big it is for everyone,” quarterback Brandon Allen told Arkansas News earlier this month. “The older guys, how big of a game it was for them. We want to honor them by playing our butts off and come away with a win, because we know how big the Arkansas-Texas rivalry is.”

Arkansas won the final meeting as members of the Southwest Conference in 1991, and the two subsequent showdowns in 2000 and 2003. That is the last time Razorbacks fans have had the elation of being their bitter rival.

Even as the two have spent more than two decades in different conferences, and Arkansas now has rivalries with LSU, Ole Miss and now Missouri, while Texas has rivalries with Oklahoma and TCU, both fan bases consider each other its preeminent rival.

Nothing can diminish the hatred between Arkansas and Texas. Not separate conferences, not going years without playing.

Arkansas and Texas. Texas and Arkansas. Whichever way you look at it, it can be defined by hate.
