Arkansas coach Bret Bielema spoke with Ivan Maisel, Chris Lowe and Adam Rittenberg on ESPN Radio on Wednesday. Bielema was asked about what he’s learned from competing in the SEC that separates the conference from all others in the country.

“After that first year, it became very evident the depth of the defensive line in this league is uncomparable to anything I’ve ever seen,” Bielema said. “The depth, I don’t think that could be any more apparent than in the championship game this year with Alabama … usually you get six, eight, maybe nine defensive linemen rolling through, but they had 12 players that played significant roles in their defense up front.”

More than just the depth, Bielema pointed out that there are also single game-changers on every SEC roster that you have to plan for.

“I think overall, on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game, there’s usually a freak or two on every team you play that you have to account for them. They can change the game literally in one play. I just think that’s something that’s probably something that’s so unique.”

As for the team’s defense, Bielema said the Razorbacks are finally getting that depth that they need to not wear out. Plus, he believes the program made a critical coaching hire.

“I think we have taken a good step forward … We return nine of 11 (starters),” he said. “I tell you another great benefit for me is I was able to hire (defensive backs coach) Paul Rhoads … He’s brought that secondary playing in a way that, I believe yesterday during practice we had our hands on seven different balls during a short practice, which is kind of an amazing number … I know our guys have a lot of defensive pride, and I’m really looking for that group to hopefully be a strength of our team.”
