Images of Auburn players bouncing off Leonard Fournette in Tecmo Bowl-like fashion still dominate everyone’s minds. Even after the Tigers’ loss to Mississippi State.

Many assume this is a week for Auburn to stop the bleeding. It’s homecoming. It’s San Jose State of the MWC. It’s a team the Tigers beat 59-13 last season. Vegas has Auburn as a 20.5-point favorite.

But as those positive vibes start coming in, and the images of Fournette’s rampage fade out, it’s worth pointing out that Auburn will be facing the only running back this season to rush for more than 300 yards in a game.

Say hello to Tyler Ervin, San Jose State’s workhouse who set the school record with exactly 300 yards on a whopping 42 carries to go with three rushing touchdowns. He eclipsed the mark of 286 set by Nathan DuPree against UNLV in 1992.

The last time a player rushed at least 40 times for 300 yards in a game was coincidentally Auburn’s own Tre Mason in the 2013 SEC Championship Game against Missouri (46 carries, 304 yards, 4 TDs).

Auburn’s coaches are making sure the Tigers don’t take him lightly, according to junior DT Montravius Adams.

The 5-foot-10, 177-pounder from Colton, Calif., certainly has SEC speed, but he only began to hit his stride as a running back halfway through 2014. Ervin faced Auburn in Week 2 of last season, only getting three rushes for 10 yards, but he flashed his pass-catching ability with a 75-yard TD reception.

Ervin, who’s also returned three kickoffs and a punt for touchdowns in his career, has remained a pass-catching threat out of the backfield with 16 catches, 137 receiving yards and a touchdown this season.

With Auburn’s offense ranking 111th in the FBS in scoring at 22.0 points per game, a few big plays from Ervin and the Spartans may make Saturday’s contest more than just a plain old game in The Plains.
