Tampa is the coastal city on the western side of central Florida. The city of tampa is in close proximity to a number of world class beaches, has a intriguing Cuban history which is plenty of fun for cigar lovers (check out Ybor City) and is an underrated sports town.

Where To Stay:

  • Downtown: There are a number of great lodging options in downtown tampa. Two great places include the Marriott Waterside and the Westin.
  • International Plaza: The Internetional Mall and surrounding area has several options including a Renaissance. There’s a very nice mall and plenty of restaurants in the area. It’s also close by to Raymond James Stadium.
  • Hard Rock Hotel & Casino: Looking for some action without having to leave the property? The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa definitely fits the bill.

Restaurant Suggestions

  • Steak Houses: Bern’s Steak House ($$$) is one of the more well known restaurants on the west coast of Florida, Charley’s Steak House ($$$) is another local favorite. Also, check out Eddie V’s ($$$).
  • Sushi: Samurai Blue Sushi & Sake Bar ($$), Soho Sushi ($$).
  • Unique: The Refinery ($$) has a regularly changing menu with unique offerings and fresh ingredients. Boca ($$) is another great spot with a fabulous menu.
  • Casual: West Tampa Sandwich Shop ($), Tampa Bay Brewing Company ($), Columbia Restaurant in Ybor has amazing history and killer food ($$)… so much so that I’ll suggest a salad! Get the 1905 Salad and extra cuban bread then whatever entree looks appealing. Wash it all down with some Sangria.

Things To Do

  • Gambling: As we mentioned above, Tampa is one of the few places in Florida with a great casino! Tampa’s Hard Rock Casino has all kinds of gambling including a great poker room.
  • Beer & Cigars: Tampa’s Ybor city has a rich Cuban history with more cigar shops that you can count. Tampa also has an underrated brewery scene. Cigar City Brewing is very popular. CCB’s Jai-Alai IPA is quite popular throughout the state of Florida. Brewery tours are available – call ahead to make sure they’re open.
  • Channelside is a fun outdoor shopping and entertainment complex in downtown Tampa. It includes a number of restaurants and a great “high end” bowling alley called Splitsville.
  • If you’re looking to hit a beach before or after your stay, St. Pete Beach is an easy trip and has a number of low cost lodging along a white powder sand beach. Want something more upscale? Hit up Siesta Key in Sarasota.

Bars

  • The Hyde Park area of Tampa has plenty of bars. MacDinton’s and Hyde Park cafe are popular options.
  • Ybor City has countless bars, clubs and night life options. Head down there and just walk the strip.
  • Channelside is a bit more upscale compared to Ybor City and has a number of bars and restaurants. Just head to Channelside and find a place that looks like a good time.

Getting To The Stadium

See if your hotel offers shuttles to Raymond James Stadium. Otherwise you’ll need to drive and park in one of the massive lots near the stadium.
