Kentucky jumped out to a 21-0 lead but couldn’t hold it as Louisville stormed back for a 38-24 victory Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.

What it means: Kentucky finishes 5-7 and is likely out of the bowl picture, though it is possible some teams with losing records will be needed to fill out the bowl schedule. Coach Bob Stoops will have a long winter.

What I liked: The Wildcats came out strong and ready to play, taking a big lead. Drew Barker led two early touchdown drives. Receivers Dorian Baker, Michael Horton and Garrett Johnson were productive, catching seven passes for 181 yards. Kentucky’s defense had three interceptions, including an 81-yard return for a touchdown by Josh Forrest.

What I didn’t like: Kentucky’s collapse was a microcosm of the season. The Wildcats jumped out to a big lead and seemed headed for a big victory. Then it all caved in. Drew Barker, who should have gained confidence from his early play, finished only 6 of 22 for 128 yards and an interception. After hitting his first three passes, Patrick Towles threw an interception into triple coverage. The Wildcats’ offense was shut down in the second half, running only 27 plays.

Who’s the man: WR Dorian Baker showed his big-play ability with 94 yards on three receptions, including a 53-yard play.

Key play: Lamar Jackson passed 35 yards to James Quick with two seconds left in the third quarter. The extra point pulled Louisville, which trailed by three touchdowns in the first half, into a 24-24 tie.

What’s next:  The season is over for Kentucky unless it is one of a few teams chosen to fill out the bowl schedule with a losing record. Though there will be speculation about Mark Stoops’ future, the coach is probably safe for at least another season.
