The Kentucky Wildcats had Florida on the ropes in the Swamp Saturday night, and were looking for a spark to help ignite an upset at the start of overtime.

The Cats got that spark from freshman tailback Stanley “Boom” Williams, who caught a ball out of the backfield and then ran, literally, sideline-to-sideline before cutting up field past the entire Florida defense for a touchdown on the first play of the extra period.

It was a tremendous play that would go on to crack SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays later that night, and at the time some thought it might be the defining play in a Kentucky victory.

In case you missed it, here’s a replay of Williams’ touchdown (and even if you’ve seen it, it’s worth another look):

Let’s take a closer look at the play.

Before the snap, Kentucky subtly moved Williams from the left of quarterback Patrick Towles to the right, perhaps in hopes of confusing the Florida defense with a shift in the backfield. However, Florida never broke from its defensive alignment, and when Williams continued to flow to the right to catch a pass out of the backfield, the Gators had no trouble swarming to the ball.

The Cats lined up three receivers on the strong side of the field, and none on the opposite side, allowing Florida to add extra defenders to the that side of the field to meet Williams after he caught the pass. Kentucky’s wideouts did an above-average job blocking for their teammate, but the UK offensive linemen charged with getting to the perimeter to set up blocks were late getting in position.

Williams seemingly hits a dead-end at the line of scrimmage, with plenty of blue and orange jerseys waiting to smother him. But rather than charge head-on at a pack of unblocked defenders, he cuts back and runs laterally along the line of scrimmage toward the left sideline.

Because the Cats’ linemen were late in getting to the perimeter, they were actually in a great position to seal off the left side of the field as Williams cut back. He picked up a head of steam and got around the edge on the left side, blazing down the sideline for a 25-yard touchdown.

Williams showed great field vision, electing to risk a loss on the play by cutting back to the left rather than forfeiting the success of the play by running right into a pack of Gators. The rest of the offense does a great job in never giving up on the play, reacting quickly to Williams’ cut-back to seal off the left side of the field to make the touchdown possible.

And it all comes to a fulfilling end with six points and the words “Boom goes the dynamite” from Brent Musburger. Even in a tough-luck loss, this is a Play of the Year candidate for the Wildcats.
