Assuming Mississippi State can get adequate play out of three new starters on the offensive line, the Bulldogs are going to score some points in 2015.

Dak Prescott appeared in total command of the offense. The receivers got the best of the defensive backs more often than not.

But despite two interceptions, backup quarterback Nick Fitzgerald led the White team to a 28-24 upset win over the Maroon team Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium.

Prescott completed 20 of 29 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns. He made all the throws, hitting De’Runnya Wilson with a back-shoulder toss, finding a hot read in the end zone on a six-man blitz and looking off a pair of linebackers on another red zone touchdown.

“I’m upset we’ve got to come at 10 o’clock (tomorrow morning to clean the stadium as part of the losing team) and we can’t sleep in, but it was good. Everybody got better,” Prescott said.

Fitzgerald, a redshirt freshman with the potential to replace Prescott in 2016, completed 20 of 30 passes. He connected with former Bulldogs running back Anthony Dixon, now with the Buffalo Bills, on a 59-yard pass for a touchdown, part of the usual spring game gimmick. But Dixon, in street clothes, had to make a nice snag to corral the pass.

Defensive lineman A.J. Jefferson was the line consistent disruptive force, making a memorable tackle in the backfield by smashing his blocker (Darrion Hutcherson) into the ball-carrier (Deddrick Thomas), taking both to the ground. He also sprinted laterally and popped Fitzgerald on a run across the middle despite the quarterback’s green no-contact jersey.

“When you’re a starter, it’s not about just coming in to make plays, it’s about doing it every single snap,” coach Dan Mullen said about Jefferson and Chris Jones, both of whom are expected to start at defensive line.

Both team’s offenses connected with the receivers consistently. The 6-foot-5 Wilson beat 5-foot-10 cornerback Jamoral Graham again and again, finishing with five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Donald Gray, a junior-college transfer, came on for the White team in the second half with three catches for 59 yards and a score. Six different players caught at least four passes on the afternoon.

Running back Dontavin Lee, who entered the game as the second-team running back behind Ashton Shumpert, put up the best numbers in the three spring scrimmages, and his strong play continued Saturday. Lee ran through arm tackles and finished with 11 carries for 53 yards.

Gerri Green and Boderick Oliver made the two interceptions for the Maroon team.
