Even the name, Ole Miss, suggests a deep-rooted sense of history and tradition unmatched by many programs. The Rebels’ 2015 schedule fits with that.

The Rebels continue long-standing rivalries with Alabama, Vanderbilt and LSU. All three of those series date back to 1894, while the Egg Bowl feud with Mississippi State started in 1901. The series with Arkansas began 107 years ago and the first meeting with Texas A&M was three years later.

That kind of ancient history won’t have much bearing on the way 2015 plays out for the Rebels, which won their first seven games last year, but limped to a 9-4 finish. Ole Miss gets a couple of weeks to try to break in new quarterback Ryan Buchanan against the likes of UT-Martin and Fresno State before getting a real test against Alabama in Week 3.

Here’s a breakdown of the Rebels’ history against every opponent on this year’s schedule.

2015 record according to history: 5-5-2*
Most unfamiliar opponents: UT-Martin, New Mexico State
Most familiar opponent: Mississippi State, LSU
Most lopsided series: vs. Alabama

*Based on which team holds an all-time series advantage.

Sept. 5 vs. UT-Martin: Ole Miss eases into the season, welcoming the Skyhawks to the Grove for the first time. Despite residing within the SEC footprint, Tennessee-Martin and Mississippi have never played. It will be a huge shock if the Rebels don’t have a 1-0 series lead by the time this one is over.

Series history: First meeting between the teams.

Sept. 12 vs. Fresno State: The Rebels and Bulldogs played in 2010 and 2011 with Ole Miss pulling out victories in both affairs. Fresno State has traditionally been among the best programs outside the Power 5 conferences, winning a weak Mountain West Conference West Division last year. But the Bulldogs weren’t a threat to knock off the big boys last year and probably won’t be this year either.

Series history: Ole Miss leads, 2-0.

Sept. 19 at Alabama: Ole Miss pulled off a rare victory against the Crimson Tide a year ago. Don’t think Alabama or its fans will have forgotten that by the time the Rebels get to Tuscaloosa. It’s a one-sided rivalry overall and Bama thrives in revenge games.

Series history: Alabama leads, 47-10-2.

Sept. 26 vs. Vanderbilt: In another series that dates back to the Grover Cleveland administration, the Rebels have the advantage — and should have it once again this year when they welcome the Commodores to Oxford.

Series history: Ole Miss leads, 49-38-2. The Rebels won last year’s meeting 41-3.

Oct. 3 at Florida: The Gators and Rebels have met relatively few times considering both are longstanding members of the SEC. Ole Miss is trying to continue something of a resurgence. Florida is looking to rebuild with a new staff. It should be an interesting matchup in a series that has been remarkably balanced.

Series history: Ole Miss leads, 12-10-1. The teams first played in 1926.

Oct. 10 vs New Mexico State: This should be a mid-season tuneup for the Rebels if Ole Miss wants to contend for a division title. From here the schedule gets much tougher for Ole Miss.

Series history: First meeting between the teams.

Oct. 17 at Memphis: The Tigers probably view this one as more of a rivalry than the Rebels do, but there’s a lot of history. Ole Miss fans should be well represented as they make the short trip to the Liberty Bowl, but junior quarterback Paxton Lynch and the Memphis offense present a legitimate threat.

Series history: Ole Miss leads, 48-10-2. The series dates back to 1921.

Oct. 24 vs. Texas A&M: The Rebels beat Texas A&M for the first time last season, winning 35-20. The talented Rebels defense should give Ole Miss a solid shot at victory No. 2 in the series this year.

Series history: Texas A&M leads, 6-1.

Oct. 31 at Auburn: Ole Miss and Auburn first met in 1928, but it’s another one of those SEC rivalries that hasn’t been played as much as you might have guessed. The Tigers pulled out a 35-31 thriller last year and it could be another close one this time around.

Series history: Auburn leads, 29-10.

Nov. 7 vs. Arkansas: Arkansas holds a slim series lead, but Ole Miss won both Sugar Bowl meetings between the teams in a rivalry that dates back to 1908. It took on added life back in 2007 when Houston Nutt left the Razorbacks for Ole Miss.

Series history: Arkansas leads, 32-28-1. The Rebels lost 30-0 last season.

Nov. 21 vs. LSU: The Tigers handed Ole Miss its first loss last year after a 7-0 start. That 10-7 heartbreaker led to four losses in the final six games for the Rebels.

Series history: LSU leads, 59-40-4. Ole Miss won the first meeting in 1894, 26-6.

Nov. 28 at Mississippi State: Ole Miss pulled off an upset of its in-state rivals in the 2014 Egg Bowl, one of the most anticipated games in the series that dates back to 1901. The 2015 edition might not hold major bowl implications, but it should be a competitive game between solid teams.

Series history: Ole Miss leads, 62-43-6.
