When prospects are versatile and can realistically project at multiple positions on the college level, the recruiting media industry often categorizes them as “athletes.”

At times, that has had a negative connotation among recruits, who do not universally enjoy being labeled that, but it’s more of a compliment as versatility is extremely useful when you are talking about building college football rosters.

With that, here are the top five prospects in the athlete category (per 247Sports Composite rankings) heading to Southeastern Conference football programs in the Class of 2016.

1. Mecole Hardman Jr., Georgia (Elberton. Ga/Elbert County)

The Skinny: Hardman is an electric prospect with great speed and quickness. He has the hips to be an elite cornerback, but could also be a game-breaking wide receiver from a talent standpoint, similar to recent UGA standout Malcom Mitchell.

2. Marquez Callaway, Tennessee (Warner-Robins, Ga.)

The Skinny: Callaway is 6-foot-1, 177-pounds and could project at multiple positions, including wide receiver, cornerback and safety, on the collegiate level. He’s an explosive athlete and is an excellent addition to the Vols roster.

3. Trevon Diggs, Alabama (Rockville Md./Avalon School)

The Skinny: Diggs, the younger brother of Stefon Diggs (of Maryland fame), has ability on either side of the ball. He’s not as pure fast as his brother, but he’s fast enough and has some of the same elusiveness and ball skills that Stefon did.

4. T.J. Hammonds, Arkansas (Little Rock, Ark./Robinson)

The Skinny: Hammonds has to fill out and put on bulk (he’s 155 pounds right now), but he’s elusive and fast and perhaps is one of the more under-hyped prospects in the country this cycle.

5. Jamal Couch, Mississippi State (Phenix City, Ala./Central)

The Skinny: Couch is 6-foot-5, 217 pounds and has excellent athletic ability. As with all prospects with his type of frame, how big he gets is going to determine a lot. The Bulldogs could have gotten yet another big steal out of the state of Alabama with this one.
