Missouri coach Gary Pinkel may not have won the SEC title game last season, but he won another kind of title.

Pinkel received $900,000 in bonuses after taking the Tigers to Atlanta for a second straight season. That marked the biggest bonus haul for a head coach in the FBS last season, according to USA TODAY Sports’ first comprehensive analysis of the incentives paid to public-school coaches over the course of a year.

According to the report, there was a total of $12.4 million in bonuses paid out to FBS coaches. There are currently 94 head coaches still with the same school from last season, and 75 of those 94 received bonuses of some type. Here’s a breakdown of the SEC’s coaches:

SCHOOL NAME BONUS
Alabama Nick Saban $425,000
Arkansas Bret Bielema $100,000
Auburn Gus Malzahn $125,000
Florida Jim McElwain N/A
Georgia Mark Richt $75,000

Here are some of the biggest takeaways from last year’s bonuses:

  • Pinkel earned 7 different types of bonuses. His biggest was $250,000 for his team meeting undisclosed academic, social responsibility & conduct goals. Some of the other bonuses include $150,000 for Mizzou winning 11 games, $100,000 for playing in the SEC title game and $50,000 for ranking between No. 11 and No. 25 in the final CFP rankings.
  • Nick Saban earned $200,000 for reaching the CFP and another $125,000 for winning the SEC title.
  • Mark Richt earned $75,000 for making a Tier 2 Bowl appearance (Belk Bowl).
  • Mark Stoops earned $100,000 for beating South Carolina 45-38 last season. That’s because his stipulation was to receive $100,000 for each SEC win starting with the second win, but that was the second and there would be no more for the Wildcats.
  • Les Miles received $100,000 for a non-BCS bowl appearance (Music City Bowl).
  • Dan Mullen got a hefty bonus of $390,000 with the money being paid by a private foundation
  • Steve Spurrier earned $100,000 for a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 950 or better.
  • Butch Jones was awarded $200,000 for appearing in a game that was in one of the SEC’s top six bowl tie-ins.
