Texas has always been a hotbed of high school football talent.

The 2017 class looks to be no different. It doesn’t hurt to be the largest state of the continental United States, but according to 247sports.com, Texas (186) ranks second nationally to only Florida (196) for the nation’s top recruits two-stars-and-up.

Two of the top eight recruits in the country from the class of 2017 play in Texas. It’s still early, but as of right now the state has three five-star prospects and all three are uncommitted.

It’s no surprise that college programs are filled with Texas athletes. Neighbors Oklahoma and LSU recruit the state heavily and offer competition to the many Power-5 conference schools within the state, including Texas A&M.

Though still very early, it appears as though the SEC is being shut out, at least by the top 10 players in the state. Only five of the 10 have made verbal commitments, but none are to SEC schools.

And, according to 247sports.com predictions, none is looking at Texas A&M. Only one has an SEC team on his radar. Austin Deculus, a four-star offensive tackle and No. 6-ranked prospect in Texas, appears to be leaning toward LSU.

Three of the five verbal commits are to different schools within the state. Ohio State has a verbal and a lean.

The Texas Longhorns, who once used to clean up within the state, now share the talent. Half of the top 10 recruits have committed or are leaning toward attending schools outside the state.

Texas A&M has some ground to make up in the state with the class of 2017. Its top verbal commit is wide receiver Mannie Netherly, a four-star athlete ranked No. 31 overall in the state.
