Here are some quick thoughts on Florida’s 61-13 victory over New Mexico State:

What it means: The Jim McElwain era is officially underway, and he’s 1-0 as the Gators’ head coach. A familiar term returned to Gainesville that was noticeably absent during the Will Muschamp era: offense. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was efficient and well executed.

What I liked: There’s obviously a lot to like against a team like New Mexico State. While everyone will talk about the quarterbacks and the passing game, the bigger takeaway is just the overall offensive efficiency. Did you notice there were far fewer penalties on offense? The overall flow of the offense improved, as did quarterback play. Will Grier and Treon Harris both had successful nights, but Grier was more decisive and on time than Harris. The tight ends also impressed, producing seven catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

What I didn’t like: For as talented as Florida’s secondary is, the Gators defensive backs got beat several times. Yeah, Vernon Hargreaves III had a nice game, but he also got beat on a pass play in the end zone that was overthrown. Florida was missing safety Marcus Maye due to a suspension. The Aggies also hit a beautiful touchdown pass in the end zone for a score. It’s correctable, and the Gators will face another air attack against East Carolina next Saturday.

Who’s the man: Although Will Grier didn’t start, he sure was sharp. He was so sharp that Jim McElwain finished the first half with Grier and ran him back out to start the second half. The offensive flow was fluid under Grier, and the timing of the passing game was very good. Grier finished 15-of-17 for 164 yards and three total touchdowns, including a rushing touchdown.

Key play: There were a number of plays that stood out, especially from the quarterbacks, but Hargreaves III climbing the ladder and returning the interception was so impressive. We all know Hargreaves is a freak, but out-jumping the receiver, keeping his balance and returning the pick reminded us all how dynamic he can be. Hargreaves even recorded a reception on offense.

What’s next: The Gators host East Carolina next Saturday in The Swamp.
