It didn’t take long for the video of an irate Jim McElwain dressing down one of his players along the sidelines during Saturday night’s 31-24 to go viral.

Just as rapid was the adverse reaction from his 94-year-old mother after seeing the profanity-laced video of the first-year Florida coach berating running back Kelvin Taylor for the unsportsmanlike penalty that followed his throat-slashing gesture immediately after scoring a touchdown.

McElwain used Monday’s weekly press conference to say that he didn’t regret criticizing Taylor, but expressed his remorse in losing his temper the way he did.

“I’m not proud, and neither was my mother,” said McElwain, whose Gators (2-0) open SEC play at Kentucky this weekend. “I got an earful from her and rightfully so.”

McElwain, who has always been passionate about the game and his players, noted that the sideline conversation with Taylor ended with a hug. The coach said the two spoke following the game and again on Sunday with no hard feelings.

“We just have to keep moving forward,” McElwain said.

They’ll both need to heed the lessons learned and put the issue behind them as they head to Lexington to face a surging Kentucky team that is fresh off a 26-22 upset win at South Carolina on Saturday.

The Gators have mastered the Wildcats in years past, having won the last 28 meetings and 34 of the last 35. No Kentucky player was even alive the last the ‘Cats beat Florida on Nov. 15, 1986.

In other press conference news:

  • McElwain said he again anticipated playing both quarterbacks Will Grier and Treon Harris this week. Grier started last week, completing 10 of 17 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns with one interception and nearly two others. Harris threw just eight passes, completing five for 54 yards. McElwain characterized their play as “OK.”
  • Florida will be without starting linebacker Alex Anzalone, who left Saturday’s game after suffering an injury to same right shoulder in which he had a torn labrum surgically corrected in 2013. Anzalone, who was starting at outside linebacker, is listed as questionable for this weekend.
  • All-American cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III should play, but is officially listed as questionable after “tweaking” his leg in practice late last week and missing Saturday’s game against East Carolina.
  • Freshman offensive tackle Martez Ivey will return to practice and is also questionable for this week as he recovers from recent arthroscopic surgery for an injury he first suffered in high school.
