South Carolina assistant coach Shawn Elliott will be named the Gamecocks’ interim head coach, replacing Steve Spurrier who’s expected to officially announce his retirement on Tuesday.

One of the program’s top recruiters, Elliott is in his sixth season as South Carolina’s offensive line coach and was given the title of co-offensive coordinator in 2012. Under his watch, quarterback Dylan Thompson shattered program passing records last season on the heels of three consecutive 11-2 seasons under the direction of Connor Shaw, South Carolina’s all-time wins leader at the position.

Elliott joined South Carolina’s coaching staff in 2010 and was instrumental in developing and transforming the Gamecocks’ offense into one of the SEC’s most potent on the ground and through the air during the program’s only run to an SEC East Division championship.

The run game has noticeably improved under his watch thanks to the likes of highly-touted backs Marcus Lattimore and Mike Davis.
