Things are good in Gainesville right now.

No. 11 Florida will win the SEC East title. The Gators can make it official with a win over Vanderbilt next week.

OK, the Commodores are still mathematically alive in the race, but would need to win their next four games (Florida, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Tennessee) and hope for a Gators collapse.

After Saturday’s 27-3 loss to the Gators, Georgia was knocked out of contention and coach Mark Richt was the target of wide-spread criticism from disappointed Bulldogs fans.

If Vanderbilt beat the Gators next week — Florida will be a heavy favorite — the Gators still could clinch in its final SEC game against USC on Nov. 14. And that’s only required if the Commodores (3-4, 1-3 SEC) win out.

Jim McElwain’s offense, defined by a strong rushing attack, found its stride against the Bulldogs. Kelvin Taylor rushed for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Treon Harris threw for 155 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Callaway that gave the Gators control for good, with no interceptions.

Florida’s defense continued to prove why it is ranked No. 18 in the country. The Gators forced five turnovers against Georgia and held it to just 69 yards rushing.

If Florida plays as well next week, the Gators will clinch, giving them almost a month to prepare for the West Division winner.

Beating Vanderbilt should not be a problem. The Commodores haven’t scored more than 17 points in any game this season, and Florida has a stronger defense than any team they’ve played.

With South Carolina and Florida Atlantic following Vanderbilt on their schedule, the Gators have an opportunity to rest, heal and prepare for their regular-season finale against Florida State and potential matchups (they’ll know more next week when LSU plays Alabama) in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, the West contenders will spend November battling each other and other strong division teams.

Florida couldn’t ask for a better setup for the postseason.
