In a move that many have been anticipating for some time, former South Carolina star running back Marcus Lattimore will join the staff in Columbia.

South Carolina’s all-time leader in touchdowns is set to join coach Will Muschamp’s staff after he graduates in May 2016, The State newspaper reported Wednesday.

According to The State, Lattimore will serve an undefined role. He will not take on the full-time hours of a coach, but instead will ” talk to the Gamecocks about life off the field beyond football, similar to what he does in his leadership academies through his foundation,” the paper reported.

Lattimore is a great ambassador for South Carolina football — a respected former player whose career essentially ended due to a devastating knee injury that eventually forced his retirement from the NFL before his pro career really started. He’s expressed an interest in working with young people, which he has done in recent months.

This seems like a smart move for South Carolina.
