Things didn’t look so good coming into Wednesday for Missouri. The Tigers entered National Signing Day with the SEC’s lowest-regarded recruiting class, and the program’s lowest-regarded class since joining the conference.

But new coach Barry Odom was able to flip another three-star player on Wednesday and finished strong enough to move out of the SEC 2016 recruiting basement.

FLIP FLOPPERS

The Tigers swayed a trio of three-star recruits to change their commitments this week. First, it was RB Damarea Crockett and QB Micah Wilson, both committed to Boise State.

Late Tuesday, the Tigers also gained three-star Brendan Scales, who flipped to Missouri from Alabama. Scales is 6-foot-4, 230 pounds and was considered the 16th-best tight end in the class. He is also regarded as the second-best player Missouri landed in this recruiting year.

NEW COACH, SAME STRATEGY

Despite the change at head coach, Missouri appears to be following the same formula that helped them win the SEC East in 2013 and 2014.

Besides four-star RB Natereace Strong, who committed to Missouri before attending junior college, the rest of the Tigers’ 2016 recruiting class is made up of three-star players. Odom will rely upon spotting under-the-radar talent and player development with this class just as Gary Pinkel often did.

The Tigers continued their tradition of picking up potential stars on the defensive line. Defensive ends Marvin Terry and Tre Williams are the two highest-ranked defensive recruits Missouri landed this year.

LAST-MINUTE ADDITION?

Missouri got a late-afternoon commitment from three three-star OT Tre’vour Simms, though his letter of intent was not confirmed.

If Simms ends up with Missouri, he will be the highest-rated offensive lineman in the 2016 class for the Tigers.
