Texas A&M parted ways with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital following a disappointing offensive season in 2015.

It took him a few weeks, but Spavital has landed on his feet with another Power 5 playcalling opportunity.

After days of speculation that he could be the next offensive coordinator at Cal, the university made things official on Thursday afternoon:

Spavital will replace former Auburn offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, who decided to leave Cal to become the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State.

Here’s what the former Aggies coach had to say about joining the Pac-12 program, according to Cal’s press release:

“It is a tremendous honor to join the Cal coaching staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach,” Spavital said. “The turnaround this program has enjoyed the past three seasons under the leadership of Sonny Dykes is phenomenal. I am excited to become a part of the staff and help take this program to new heights. I’m looking forward to building on the great foundation that has been established. I think this will be an excellent fit and I can’t wait to get started.”

Spavital inherits a Cal offense that ranked eighth in the country in 2015 with 529.2 yards of total offense per game, but will have the challenge of replacing QB Jared Goff, who is projected to be an early selection in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Former UCLA OC Noel Mazzone is the new architect of Kevin Sumlin’s offense in College Station.
