The gem of Mississippi State’s 2016 recruiting class faces charges.

According to WCBI News, five-star defensive end Jeffery Simmons faces charges for disturbing the peace due to fighting after he was caught on video allegedly striking a woman multiple times on Thursday evening.

According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, the other charge is assault for role in a fight. Both are misdemeanors.

Simmons, the highest-rated recruit in the state of Mississippi and No. 3 defensive end in the class according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, issued an apology to Sophia Taylor and her family on Facebook this past Saturday, the same day that the station released footage of the incident.

“We are aware of the situation,” Mississippi State University public affairs director Sid Salter told The Clarion-Ledger on Monday. “As more details become available, we will continue to evaluate the situation.”

Simmons was expected to enroll at the school this summer.
