Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley announced in a statement through the school yesterday that he was going to retire after 25 years overseeing the athletic department. Today, Foley hosted a press conference, and he talked about how it was the perfect time for him to leave.

“Everything comes to an end for all the right reasons,” Foley said. “It’s my call. I’m not sick. This job has energized me and I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s a perfect time for a transition because everything’s going so well. (…) You want transition when the stock is high.”

Foley talked about the importance of football and the money behind it, but also about what it means to be an athletic director, overseeing every single sport.

He also spoke about his future with the University of Florida and in somewhat of a joking manner, what the next athletic director should expect.

“I’ve been offering opportunities on staying here,” Foley said. “I don’t ever want a clean break from the Gators. (…) They’re walking into an incredible place. Not just the championships or the facilities, but the people. I will tell them to not open up their emails after we lose a football game.”

Foley was a part of 27 different national championships with the University of Florida over his 25 years as the athletic director and wasn’t shy when describing the position he’s been in over the last quarter of a century.

“At the end of the day, I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

Prior to Foley speaking, it was said that more information on the search process for a new athletic director would be available at a later time.
