As fall camp continues at Texas A&M, position battles become more and more clear. And while nothing is written in stone, players are beginning to step up and Kevin Sumlin and his staff are getting a better idea of what they have to work with and which players they can depend on for the 2016 season.

The offensive line is a big concern since Germain Ifedi led a group of talented players out the door in their final season at College Station. It’s an offensive line with very little experience coming back. Only left tackle Avery Gennesy started each game in 2015.

ESPN recently ranked the SEC offensive lines and didn’t think much of a group with many holes to fill. Texas A&M ranked eighth among the 14 teams. That’s even with the return of offensive line coach Jim Turner, who produced some outstanding lines for the Aggies during his first stint (2008-11) in College Station.

Texas A&M ranked behind Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas and Florida in that order.

But progress is being made in fall camp, even though Sumlin said he is still looking at several combinations along the line.

“We moved a couple guys around there, just to get some looks and some reps at who those guys are going to be,” Sumlin said following a recent practice.

Gennesy and Koda Martin are projected to be starters at tackle. Redshirt freshman Erik McCoy has impressed enough to be the leader for the center position. Senior Jermaine Eluemunor looks to be a starter at guard along with either Colton Prater, who has made huge strides this offseason, or the versatile Keaton Sutherland on the other side.

Putting the group together and having them jell would be very good news for new quarterback Trevor Knight, who continues to do nothing but solidify his role as leader of the offense. Since first stepping on campus, Knight has taken ownership of the position, and the strong-armed passer is making all the throws in practice.

Another question mark heading into fall practice is the running back position. Replacing 1,000-yard rusher Tra Carson will be tough to do, but at least a trio of contenders have been playing well in fall workouts. James White appears to be the leader for starting running back. However, both Kendall Bussey and Kwami Etwi have also seen meaningful reps at that spot.

White is the leading returning rusher from last season. The bad news is he only rushed 55 times (196 yards, 1 TD) in his sophomore season. As a walk-on freshman, Etwi carried only 20 times in 2015, good for 151 yards, but his 7.6 yards per carry average was tops on the team.

Bussey is a redshirt freshman from New Orleans, La., who could fill the role. But so could Oklahoma transfer Keith Ford, who is making up for lost time after missing spring practice with an injury.

The Aggies held their second scrimmage on Saturday and will conduct a mini-scrimmage on Wednesday. A lot of unanswered questions should be addressed by those tests.

At least that’s what the team is hoping as Texas A&M opens the 2016 season on Saturday, Sept. 3 with UCLA at Kyle Field.
