Texas A&M remained unbeaten for the 2016 season with an easy 67-0 victory over Prairie View A&M at Kyle Field. It was a dominating performance as expected on all sides of the football with the Aggies pulling away after a 21-point second quarter.

What it means: Nothing other than building some confidence and getting reps. With a new backfield in OC Noel Mazzone’s new system, just running plays against an inferior defense was much needed. Same could be said for the defense where DC John Chavis, in his second season at Texas A&M, continues to implement his system.

What I liked: With early season emphasis on offense, it was good to see QB Trevor Knight take charge of it. He still has some improvement to make in regards to accuracy in the passing game, but Knight has taken charge of the offense and looks to be fairly confident in what he’s trying to do. Along those same lines, running back Keith Ford, an Oklahoma transfer like Knight, looked the part as the Aggies’ leader in the run game.

What I didn’t like: Not much not to like. The red zone offense was sloppy early. While Texas A&M moved the football up and down the field with relative ease, it was inside the 20 where the Aggies struggled in the opening possessions. A 1st-and-goal from the 5-yard line resulted in a field goal. Knight threw an ill-advised pass from the 10-yard line that was intercepted. Other than that, not much negative in the lopsided victory.

Who’s the man: Linebacker Shaan Washington turned in a big game and was a big reason for the one-sided victory. Attempting to put behind the criticism of the Aggies’ linebackers, Washington came up big. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound senior made five tackles and was a demon in foiling the Panthers’ passing game, breaking up five passes.

Key play(s): Knight ran 32 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the first quarter as the Aggies built a 17-0 lead and the rout was on. Knight finished the game with 78 yards on 7 carries, and he went 21-for-37 passing with 344 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT.

What’s next: The Aggies open SEC play next Saturday with Auburn. It will be their first road game of the season, a 6 p.m. CT kickoff at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
