Presumed by many to be a trendy Super Bowl pick, it was a disaster of a 2016 season for the Arizona Cardinals.

Injuries and inconsistency has led to the Cardinals (5-8-1) being eliminated from postseason contention. It’s also resulted in the shutting down of defensive back Tyrann Mathieu.

With Arizona previously having a glimmer of hope in the postseason chase, Mathieu insisted on being out on the field with multiple injuries. It was clearly evident Mathieu was not the same player prior to the physical ailments.

Not only has he been battling a shoulder injury, but he’s also not fully recovered from the torn ACL he suffered last year.

With two meaningless games remaining, Arizona opted to place Mathieu on the injured reserve — thus ending his season.

Mathieu is a Pro Bowl-caliber player when healthy — and is one of the most exciting defenders in all of the NFL. One can hope he’ll be able to shake the injury bug and be completely well at the start of next season.
