Out with the old and in with the new seems to be the theme of the latest transaction from Pittsburgh, as the Steelers announced the release of Zach Mettenberger Monday afternoon. The former standout LSU quarterback served as the team’s third-string quarterback last season after being released by San Diego prior to the start of the 2016 NFL season.

The decision to cut Mettenberger likely became much easier for the Steelers following the team’s fourth-round selection of former Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs Saturday in the latest draft. Mettenberger did not take a snap for Pittsburgh last season, after playing in 14 total games for the Titans his first two seasons in the NFL (2014-15).

Mettenberger was a sixth-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Titans. His place on the Titans roster became less valuable following the drafting of Marcus Mariota.

In his LSU career, Mettenberger threw for 5,783 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.
