The Florida Gators are baseball national champions for the first time in program history.

The Gators beat LSU 6-1 Tuesday night to win the best-of-three College World Series final.

Gators’ freshman Tyler Dyson pitched six innings of impressive baseball against the Tigers, and Florida scored four runs in the eighth inning to break it wide open.

Although Jared Poche lost, he leaves LSU as the winningest pitcher in program history. LSU’s defense did him no favors, as it made three errors.

One of the more dramatic moments in the game came when LSU put together the start of a big inning in the seventh, but runner interference at second base on a double play made the tying run go back to third. Florida got out of the jam still up 2-1.

Following Brady Singer’s impressive outing in game one — a CWS final record 12 strikeouts, Dyson came back and pitched another gem in game two.

It’s clear: Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan is a rising star, and he has built a national power in Gainesville. And if you look at the returning roster, Florida should be back in Omaha next year. The pitching rotation for the Gators this year — and next year — is downright dirty.

While LSU won the SEC Championship tournament, the Gators won the national championship. Regardless, the SEC is the top conference in college baseball.
